the song has no meaning its a bunch of mumbo jumbo i mean the music is great but im sorry the words kill it for me unless some one here knows the inspiration eddie had or the meaning eddie had behind this song then that would really help me get into this song but from the surface its just random. So if you can a quote from some one in the band to just tell me what this song means... thank you

  • There are plenty of threads that address this song.

    It does have meaning.

For me the children's book, movie release 10/16, Where the Wild Things Are comes out in the lyrics. I have made a post Where the Wild Things Are detailing this, but only a few have commented.

You are right the music is great, but the lyrics are too.

"All the thoughts,... You never see,... You’re always thinking,...
Brain is wired,... Brain is deep,.."

I think of my 6 year old son who is ALWAYS thinking whenever I listen to this song. Anyone else out there with boys know where I am coming from.

    Peace.

  • Best song on Backspacer. <
    PERIOD
  • ok first of all thank you for helping me give some interpretation to the song. I respect that you like the song but tell me why i mean it has no meaning? or does it? what is it and not just what is it to you what the hell was it for eddie hahahaha

    PERIOD

    Agreed

And "worsed"? What the hell does that even mean?

And "Unthought Unknown"? That song's not even on the Backspacer album.

What you meant to write was, "unthought known is the worst" and even then you were horribly wrong.
  • Since Ten, which came with a few scrawled words and phrases, Ed has maintained he doesn't want to reveal what he was thinkin, the lyrics are for us to go deep inside and fish out the meaning each song has for ourself. Sometimes it takes me a long while and then it just pops into my head. So sometimes I play the game "What was Ed thinkin" but I think he'd rather I knew what I am thinkin. And I really like "Unthought Known", the title is the answer to your question

the above will give you EV's insight on each and every song on Backspacer.

hears what he said about Unthought known:

“It's about a conversation with Catherine Keener, and a book – I think it might have even been called Unthought Known . I got back late to my hotel in New York, and I pushed it that extra hour. I pushed the limits of how much you can drink and smoke, and this song came out of it. I think the thought of the song is that there are things that you know, and they're in us, but we just haven't thought of them. But they're there, and we base decisions on them.”

It was pointed out to me after I made the Where The Wild things Are connection that Catherine Keener plays Max's mother in the movie. Very cool.

If you have never read the book do so while playing Unthought known.

just the other night the only light that shone through my window was that of the moon and when this song played, the universe flet so big, and i felt all the more alone... but with God... and that's what these words do for me at least... at a time when loneliness seems to be creeping through my insides... like he says: "look for love n evidence, that you're worth keeping"... that should keep me going for a bit ...i hope:)

i'm never out to get every meaning behind every word of Ed's ... I've just been takin in, gratefully, whatever Pearl Jam give, for a very long time now, and it all just emcompasses me, shapes me, fucks with me, pains me...but guides me as i go on.... consciously, subconsciously... and unconsciously:) ... but that's just me...

    To the OP-->

Just because you don't understand something don't go calling it "the worst" or, even "the worsed". ;)

Read some of the ideas about the song and maybe you'll grow to like the words a bit more.

I think it's a song about ideas. Beauty vs. negativity. What is a person to choose? A trip to the moon or a day by your own personal garbage dump?!

I also think it's meant to remind people that they create their own world to live in by what they choose to think about and do.

  • I can think of quite a few of my favourite songs that have strange lyrics, but they don't lessen my enjoyment of them.

You're being overly critical. Evre thought of a job at Pitchfork?
It's gonna be a glorious day...
  • HAHAHAH I can be an English teacher and just misspell things on purpose hahaha. Unthought Known is my second favorite track on the cd. before I posted this my friend said to me the same original post I put on here and I said the same things you guys were saying to me, to him. Its funny how serious you guys get on here and angry to someone you cant see or hear or never met. I could love courtney love but just love a reaction more hahahaha. Its great. Unthought Known is a beautiful song and is about the human psyche. Often times I too just think about thinking hahahaha. Later losers
  • But sometimes it takes some anger to get the love of a pearl jam song out i guess
  • Why call us losers?

I for one was not critical, just offering insight dude.

Hope you find peace life is too short.
  • hahaha I have found peace look at you you just got so hurt cause a stranger called you a loser right after saying that I say things to get to you people hahaha I have peace I hope you do to.
  • I love you all or do I hate you all. You guys are loser you guys are beautiful! Which is it??!?!?!?! lol
