Was "Down" too good for Riot Act?

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but try running a search for Down and see what happens :D

Anyways, I think that Down is hands down one of the best b-sides any band has ever recorded and was better than the majority of Riot Act. Now I'm not a hater like some towards that album, but facts are facts people. I really think that the band had a very specific tone and vibe that they wanted for that album even if it meant leaving off this classic.

At first I misread what you wrote and thought you said it was hands down THE best.

I was gonna put on gloves and we were going to have at it ;)

  • I do think the tone of Down did not fit with the other music to an extent, but always felt it should have been part of that album. Maybe it was just too fun.

It is a great song, but it would stick out like a sore thumb on Riot Act.

agreed. too much of a pop song. you remember when lost dogs came out?? i remember one review saying that it was a collection of pop songs. i always found that interesting. trying to make music that defines them instead of writing radio friendly songs..

agree, would not have fit with the rest of RA, which by the way has the best opening 3 songs on any PJ album, outside of Ten that is.

Really? I would say 5 albums have a far better opening. Riot Act is solid and kills Binaural's opening though.

    Once, Evenflow, Alive
    Go, Animal, Daughter
Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Not For You
Sometimes, Hail Hail, Who You Are
Brain of J, Faithful, No Way

Cant Keep is an amazing album opener. Binaural should have opened with Of The Girl.

    Openers:

    Ten > Riot Act
Riot Act > Vs. (Can't Keep beats Go, Save You beats Animal, Daughter beats LBC)
Riot Act > Vitalogy (Not for You beats LBC)
Riot Act > No Code (Just barely with LBC being a far better song than Who)
Riot Act > Yield (LBC is way better than No Way and Save You beats Faithful)

All my opinions, but those 3 RA songs are in perfect placement. Can't Keep builds the rage that Save You blast right the fuck out of you and LBC is one of their most moving songs.

    I love it!

Go>Animal is obviously better than Can't Keep>Save You.....

I could actually get on board with RA>Vitalogy with only STBC edging out Save You

LBC isn't as good as WYA.....Let's see...... Irons or Boom?? Jack Irons all the way...WYA is 10x as interesting

You about got puked on with the Yield comment

I say Binaural/RA is a wash, with the Evacuation chorus really draggin Binaural down..Binaural still takes 2/3

I've probably seen things more wrong, but your post was definitely worth a second look, to see if it topped the list.

i always thought breakerfall > gods dice was a great one two punch. these two songs really compliment each other back to back. great way to open an album.

i really do like can't keep (probably one of two or three songs off RA that i actually like), but not as a one two opening punch with save you.
  • thanks.

On a 2nd look you are right about LBC and Who You Are. I am a big Jack fan and my statement was wrong.

You have a point with yeild too, but I still like LBC live more than No Way live.

But I have never been a fan of Go.

    But again thanks for expanding.

    cheers.

lol, same here. I quoted him and was about to start ranting about how many b-sides are better than Down before I glanced up and saw that he put "one of the best"

Down definitely deserves more than a spot on Lost Dogs. Definitely should have been on an album.

Love Can't Keep and Save You but Love Boat Captain is one of my all time LEAST favorite PJ songs. Just too cheesy for me lyrically. I think the best opening trio has to be Yield with Brain of J., Faithful and No Way

Whoa. I think it's one of Ed's best lyrical jobs ever. Not cheesy at all. You have to look past the title.

Amen Sister Act. Down is WHACKKKKKKK.

One of my least favorite PJ songs. Don't understand why they play it so much.

Its like the sound when someone goes OVER on the Price is Right.

    Bum bum bum bummmmmmm.
