On Saturday, my son (now 13) and I will be running in a half-marathon in Hartford, CT. My son is running to raise money for the Tourette Syndrome Association; this is a cause that is very important to him, as he has Tourette's (TS), and right now his symptoms are debilitating. He is anxious about running such a long distance, but I am confident that, one way or another, he will finish the race. He works hard to do the things he wants to do despite frequent tics that obstruct his airway, throw his body on the ground, and cause him constant pain.

I know times are tough for a lot of people, and many of us have spent a ton of cash on concert tickets recently :D . I am proud of my son for challenging himself and for working to raise awareness about Tourette's, so I thought I would post something here to help his cause.

There are a lot of misconceptions about TS. If you would like to have a better understanding of TS, you can start by visiting www.tsa-usa.org; the Wikipedia entry on Tourette Syndrome also is a very good resource.

Thanks for reading. :)
