i saw the decemberists on the 25th, they played their new album, the hazards of love, in it's entirety. i really dig the decemberists but to be honest when it came out i didn't like it nearly as much as i did their other albums. i saw them on their last tour and they were great then, too, but seeing them perform the whole album without any real break and how flawlessly they changed instruments and how often they would just for a single song....it really blew me away. it made me not care about 'rarities' and not really hearing many older songs. if you can see them you should!

they had 2 girls with them, not sure who they were. they alternated between different instruments in the back and occasionally sang. last tour they covered cheap trick's 'southern girls', this time they did heart's 'crazy on you' with those 2 girls signing.

like i said, they played the complete 'the hazards of love' then

Angel, Won't You Call Me?
Leslie Anne Levine
Crane Wife 3
Down by the Water (a new song, not the neil young one, audio is at setlist.fm)
Shankill Butchers
The Chimbley Sweep
Dracula's Daughter
O Valencia
Crazy on You
Encore:
Raincoat Song
Sons and Daughters

none of the older songs i had wanted to hear but the show was so good that doesn't matter

they had 2 girls with them, not sure who they were. they alternated between different instruments in the back and occasionally sang. last tour they covered cheap trick's 'southern girls', this time they did heart's 'crazy on you' with those 2 girls signing.

Those girls are Becky Stark from Lavender Diamond and Shara Worden of My Brighest Diamond.

Both of those bands have previously opened for the Decemberists, and these two ladies are both on the recording of Hazards of Love. They play their parts which they play on the album.

To me, Shara stole the show. She is an amazing talent. When I saw her (with My Brightest Diamond) open for the Decemberists in 2007, she litarally made my jaw drop ... and I'm serious ... literally. Both the song Magic Rabbit and her cover of Zeppelin's No Quarter were so phenominally done.

Here is a video of the Decemebrists form SXSW ... if you click on the link (down the left side of the page) for The Wanting Comes in Waves (Repaid) ... you'll see Shara come out and tear it up ...

  • My Brightest Diamond is great, I had the same feeling you did when I saw them open for the Decemberists in 2007. Would have loved to see her playing with them. The Decemberists are one of my favorite bands.

if you love the Decemberists, you really shouldn't miss this tour. You have 2 more west coast chances ... sadly, I don't think the Portland show will be as good, appears to be a "kid's show", whatever that is ... perhaps, look into it ....

  • damn, I missed them when they played in Redmond. I usually don't miss them on a tour. I am kicking myself now. I will pass on the kids show, that doesn't sound so great and it looks like I couldn't get tickets anyway

    The Decemberists Play Kids' Show

The Decemberists will be playing a special set of music for kids as part of the "You Who" series, a new monthly children's variety rock show, on Saturday, October 24 at the Kennedy School in Portland, OR. The show is at 1 PM and doors open at 12:30 pm. Capacity is very limited, so we suggest buying tickets well in advance.
