Complete list of PJ originals -- HELP NEEDED

I am trying to come up with a definitive list of original Pearl Jam songs that have been released. This list does not include live "originals" or improvisations (like "Out Of My Mind" or "You're True"), or things that were recorded, but never officially released ("I'm Still Here" or "Foldback"/"Thunderclap"). Short of that, I have tried to be inclusive-- even "Writer's Block" makes it on this list (it is sort of rhythmic).

Here's where I need your (collective) help. Can you tell me if anything is missing from the list below? (Apologies for the length of the message; I count 164 original Pearl Jam songs.) By the same token, if you see anything inconsistent below (i.e., if you include this song, you need to include that song), let me know. Please note that songs with no official title (e.g., what people call "Hummus") are all listed under "Untitled" with further description.

Thanks in advance for the wisdom of the crowd.

    Nevermind ( Untitled )

I just saw a huge list of pearl jam songs and didn't read the rest

The OP clearly stated that Hummus was included as "Untitled (Yield track)."

There's something on Binaural (hidden at the end) called Typing. Is that the same thing as Writers Block?

    thank you.

I'm not sure is 2000 mile blues should be counted, it seems like just a one off jam in the studio that just happened to get recorded.

O.K. Do you think the same goes for "Evil Little Goat"? What do we know about the genesis of these tracks?

Nice work by the way.... I think i'll add this as a page in my adobe indesign lyric book

Untitled from LO2L was never recorded in the studio.
  • ahh.
somehow I missed "not looking for covers"

True. I included it because, unlike other improvs, it was performed enough to where (other than Eddie changing the number every time) it had a distinct and consistent form, and it was released on "Live On Two Legs." But now that you point it out, I think I'm leaning towards adding "Out Of My Mind" to the list, even though it was only performed twice.

  • if you don't want to include live originals, should Bee Girl be on this list? It was released on LD, but it is a live rendition done with Jeff at a radio station isn't it?

To me that song should be on there b/c it's always the same... vs. something like the untitled intro to MFC where it's always different.

Also... if I'm not mistaken, Olympic Platinum was written by Nick DiDia who is a producer that works closely w/ Brendan O'Brien... not really sure if this would count as an original or not...

I included it because, as far as I know, Pearl Jam is the first/only artist to have recorded it.

You're right there, it's not a Pearl Jam original.

How about "The Forest", its on Immagine In Cornice during Jeffs skating scene (I think?). Jeff wrote it & brought it in for the Avocado sessions but it didnt make the album, so he re-recorded it himself and put it on "Tone".

Stone did the same with "Cadillac" from the album Bayleaf during the Yield sessions.

It all gets a bit murky when you have guys writing material individually!

Also, why is "I'm Still Here" not included?
And "Goodbye" by Eddie, is that billed as an Eddie song or a Pearl Jam song on the "Brokedown Melody" Soundtrack??

What about the song they did with Cypress Hill, "The Real Thing"...did PJ or Cypress Hill write that?

I believe Goodbye is billed as Ed only. And I don't know if The Real Thing would count since Ed wasn't involved in it.

I'm Still Here should be included, as it was the Japanese bonus track for Lost Dogs I believe, as opposed to 4/20/02 for North America, which is included on this list. I don't think any songs that were rejected for PJ but subsequently recorded for a solo disc would pertain here in this context. But I could be wrong!

That list is valuable, and I consulted it to come up with the list I posted, but it is not 100% accurate.

I did not know that about "I'm Still Here." This is exactly the kind of help I'm looking for.

Funny you should mention "The Real Thing." I was just listening to that (awful) song yesterday. But I view that as akin to "Mirror Ball." Those songs don't fit with what I'm going for on this list.

As for the Stone and Jeff compositions, there was never any band version that saw the light of day, so I think those are a whole 'nother animal. This list definitely is not intended to include "solo" material. I almost left off "Dead Man" for that reason, but included it because Pearl Jam released it under the band's name as a B-side even though (I think) only Ed plays on it.
