There's only so many riffs that can be created. People use others riff and unintentially copy other's riffs all the time. Pearl Jam is just as guilty.
  • maybe now they consider themselves even for the ALIVE solo...

I remember an interview where Mike admits to ripping off and embelishing on an Ace Frehley solo. Old friendly Frehley respects Mike and probably loves what he did with the solo. I can't remember which one it is. I notice he has just released a solo record that has got some good reviews.

The we have the whole given to fly/going to california issue. I think Jimmy Page was flattered that he'd 'influenced' Mike, he didn't see it as a rip off at all.

When i was playing bass i used to study Jeff's work, also John Deacon, Billy Talbot, Jim Hilburn, Darcy, and others - was I ripping them off - no, I just liked their sound and it helped form my style.
  • Mike ripped of the solo in "She" and has admitted it.

I'll be seeing KISS at MSG on Saturday night and will more than likely hear the song live and imagine I'll be hearing even flow sometime in the next couple of nights so I'll have a good live point of reference.

I will be seeing Springsteen at Giants Stadium on Friday. I'm sure i hear a lick from Springsteen's "Cover Me' just before the chorus in Force of Nature. He's playing the entire Born in the USA album that night, I'll keep my ears open.

It could be far worse, just look at the rip offs in DJs and Rap Music - they call it sampling, I call it rip off. In fact, I don't even call that crap music.

I have no problems either way, but though the "Alive" solo was sort of a Kiss solo in "She", the same Kiss solo was actually from the Doors "Five to One", per Ace Frehley in Guitar mag several years ago

This is so weird, I was just listening to Howard stern and Gene Simmons called in and they played a snippet of this song and i was totally thinking it sounded like the evenflow riff !! Then to come on here and see this thread ! WEIRD !!

I think you, or whoever told you made this up.

Jimmy Page knows enough about music(and rippin off :D ) to see that the songs aren't all that similar. A few small similarities don't make a ripoff.

Metallica ripped the Why Go riff

Hell, PJ have even ripped themselves off a few times, in the last couple albums.

if "kid rock" can basically take two songs and make his "own" out of it... i'm not so bothered by kiss ripping off pj.. at least its a great song and band to copy

Stready on before you accuse me of making stuff up. It was on Aussie triple J radio way back when Yeild was released and that controversy/discussion first started. I don't recall if Jimmy Page was interviewed or if the reporter quoted him verbatum.

I was Jimmy Page who said it. Actually he went on to say what you said aswell. Mike was also quoted, saying he'd obviously listened to Led Zeppelin 4 a lot and would not be surprised if it had rubbed off on him, but the song was original. Something just about all talk back callers agreed to.

That was the point i was trying to make, maybe I should have added more to my original comment. I never saw the two songs as that similar and could not understand all the fuss.

    Respect to two great guitarists.

I see.......I'd never heard Jimmy Page talk about PJ. Cool to know.

Johnny Guitar sounds an awful lot like early KISS (not the vocals, just guitars)

I thought the same about 'Unempoyable', if not kiss, then other 70's rock. I love it.

yep...these guys (PJ) grew up on Kiss...just like me...that dual guitar of Ace/Paul was a huge influence

A lot of people dismiss them but early Kiss really kicked ass....there was some good shit there

What about the dual guitars of Thin Lizzy - I always loved that when combined with Phil Lynnot's bass and vocals.

It's not even close. Lizzy are the better band. And there are probably more Kiss songs that I like.

I'm with you Dewie, Lizzy for a brief moment in time had it perfect. My guitar teacher was a personal friend of the band (he grew up with them in Ireland). The stories he told me and the music he put me onto really opened my eyes.

In Some Kind of Monster, James pay tribute to Lizzy and Lynott, I'm sure Gene and Paul would too. No doubt Ace would tip his hat (if he could find it) :)
