nicked this from MSN homepage, interesting little article about men and women and their choice of wheels...
http://editorial.autos.msn.com/listarti ... id=1091905
a small excerpt:
For millennia, men and women have tried to understand each other's likes and dislikes. Diligent researchers, both male and female, have discovered a few reliable gender-specific preferences (flowers, beer, etc.) that will warm the heart of the opposite sex. But for the most part, the sexes remain a mystery to each other. When it comes to cars, however, it is easy to quantify who buys what and why. Market research firm Strategic Vision tracks exactly this sort of demographic data in its New Vehicle Experience Study, which surveyed 130,000 new-vehicle buyers.
So are men and women totally different automotive shoppers? Company spokesman Alexander Edwards says that when it comes to the core qualities an automobile should have, men and women tend to have similar expectations. "It's a misconception that men and women are looking for something dramatically different," he says. In the study, the top three desirable traits in a vehicle were "functional," "capable" and "accommodating" for men and women alike. But since most modern vehicles possess these basic traits, men and women start differentiating on a vehicle's personality. Men are looking for vehicles that are "aggressive" and "powerful" (muck and muscle) whereas women are more interested in "smart," "protective" and "cute" autos (sugar and spice) — and those personality traits are what make a vehicle more masculine or more feminine.
It's worth mentioning that there are two ways to track buying patterns for men versus women — by volume (i.e., of the total number of cars sold, which ones were bought by the most men or women) or by index (i.e., regardless of volume, which vehicles were bought disproportionately by men or women, as expressed by a deviation from the mean). From that data, we've picked out our choices for the top five men's cars versus the top five vehicles women can't live without.

That's almost confirmation that i'm nomal... kinda...
... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
This one totally throws us. If women are practical creatures who can be won over with a cute and stylish design, how can we explain the high index score of the PT Cruiser (starting at $18,720), which is neither practical nor stylish? The retro-wagon design of the PT Cruiser was dated within two years of its 2000 release, yet it mystifies those of us in the auto press by continuing to sell well. The Cruiser exists in a world of performance mediocrity, with two engine options (both 2.4-liter four cylinders, one with a turbocharger and one without) that are not impressively powerful (180 horses for the turbo, 150 without) or efficient (don't expect over 26 mpg on the highway). True, the interior is spacious for the vehicle's size and the ride is smooth, but it's hard to escape the feeling that you're piloting a rolling anachronism. What do women know about this vehicle that auto writers don't?
hahaha.
i am a very 'practical' car owner. i am only on my second car ever, in my life. a neon. when it finally goess off to car heaven, i am hoping to not even replace it. however, if i did, i would more than likely get a scion Xa (basically a toyota) or a honda fit. just so practical and small. if i were to 'splurge' at all, it would be on a convertible mini cooper, but that is very unlikely! i just like a zippy, dependable car. a sunroof os always nice too.

SMELL YER MA!
NO JENNY! That's a MAN's car!

hahahaha.
guess you'd 'love' my little chrysler neon then. :P
i loved it when i first bought it, my only brand-new car, but sadly, it was/is a bit of a lemon. it has seemingly improved with age, and yet....not 'reliable' if you truly want to travel. live and learn.
outside of major cities, getting your driver's license is an all-american rite of passage.
and jenny, i think my oldest sister drives that car.

4. GMC Savana Cargo Van
Oh, baby . . . nothing says stone cold love machine like a van. Sure, we know most of the male buyers who sent this puppy up to No 2. on the index of vehicular maleness needed it for work — plumbers, carpenters, exterminators, etc. But we hope at least a few of these fellas have given their Savana (starting at $24,365) the "if-this-van's-a-rockin'-don't-come-a-knockin'" shag-rug, built-in-couch-and-disco-ball treatment. Because we'd hate to think the only action the inside of this incredibly useful, configure-it-any-way-you-want-it vehicle sees is hauling plumbing supplies.

Yeah, it would be sweet to turn it into the Mystery Machine, or that van Mr. T drove around all the time. This may also qualify for "You know you're old when..."
I hate "masculine" cars. Hummers actually enrage me. It annoys me that someone would feel the need to take up that much space in the world. Fine if your transporting a family of 5...but I usually see single a**holes tailgating people on the road.

One thing i always notice, and find very odd: you tell a woman you bought a new car, and it never fails...before they even ask the make or model, they ask what colour it is....
*cough*
I'm totally guilty of that......my boyfriend tells me about cars he sees daily and that's always my first question...ha! At least I know I'm girly in that way...

as i said, very unlikely. i really don't like to spend serious $$$ on a car.
and lizardjam, well yes...it says top 5 cars, so i am sure there are other choices. :P besides which, as with most things, these lists can never encompass all tastes. i do like the VW beetles, tho id never buy one either. i do like a few sports cars too, but again, i am just very practical. perhaps if i were wealtheir i'd be more willing to buy an expensive, impractical car. my husband loves the audi TT, and so do i....but it is not very practical. so, when the time came around for him to get a new car, we bought him a nissan versa. he loves it, i love it....but sure, more $$$ and we'd splurge more. as it is being realistic, it is a GREAt car, is great for his commute, and great to haul around all his band gear to gigs.
drowned, i always ask what model first - tho that usually is offered first - then i ask color.

I didn't mean to crap on anyone else's choice, or likes. I understand about the economy of a car. I drove a geo prizm for nearly 10 years, that had no power anything but got good gas mileage. I bought myself(first car I paid everything for) my first car in 07. I had been driving broken down cars for 14 years and promised myself I'd get a nice car. So I got the TSX! Unfortunately my commute now is long and I am paying for it in gas. I understand that need! I wasn't trying to be condescending or any such manner. Though, I really do want a new challenger now....doesn't mean I can afford it...

no, no, no...didn't take it that way at all!
was just responding to your post about you being a chick and not liking any of the choices that apparently 'most females' like. that was all. no offense at all. out of the 5, i'd be most apt to get the honda civic, again, very practical. but actually, i want a good and inexpensive car. it kills me to think that 15k IS inexpensive nowadays.
my first car was a plymouth sunbird. i loved it simply b/c it was my first and it was MINE. i drove that thing forevvvveeerrr. didn't buy my neon until i was already married! said, i better buy a new car before i start grad school, get a house, etc...b/c i'll never be able to afford new again. i wish i spent the extra $$$ then and got a civic. c'est la vie. hubby's had like 10 cars, typical american male ....but the versa is his first brand-new car. and yes, before know1 possibly jumps in and mentions what a bad investment a brand-new car is  ...we know, we know....but we wanted it anyway. and yes, we paid cash.
right now, my commute is by train! so yea, if we could....i'd like to be a one-car family! tho now hubby works saturdays, so i think we'll always want 2 cars...

I could never go without a car. Ever. Typical Los Angeles person I suppose. I have been to san francisco and new york and would possibly go homicidal if I had to drive there.
I actually like the older civics. I looked into buying one when I was in the market for a new car. I just detested the direction they went in with the new look. If they had a hybrid with the old body style I'd probably have that instead. A civic hybrid with navigation was cheaper than the car I have now. I'm with you on the new car thing. I wanted to say that I could buy myself one at one point in my life. I was appreciative that my family had handed me down or given me my first three cars(no I didn't crash them they just died). It's just hard when they need to be fixed VERY OFTEN. I wanted to make my own car choice for once, pay for it and own it! Maybe that's a girl thing too? I wanted green but I also wanted a good deal so I got charcoal grey.....

the PT cruiser is your all time favorite car :?:
well cars are crazy expensive, so not an easy thing to do!
tho when i think back to it, i got my neon back in 95 with every option i desired (and it's green ) for the same price we paid for our brand new nissan versa (and it's charcoal grey, what we wanted!). so in some ways, cars are better priced, or so it seems. either way tho, cars are just expensive. period. and i hear ya on the choices for yourself. i was lucky in that i had some say in my first car (tho my parents bought it for me, used, with a strict budget)...but you bet, more than likely i'd not have chosen a 4 door sunbird with a blue interior.
as to driving in NYC, i don't recommend it, unless absolutely necessary. however, while i work in manhattan - hence the train commute - i live on long island, thus the car dependence. i lived in london for 1.5 years, no car...it's amazing how freeing it can be to not need a car. however, even if i got rid of my car, we'd still have A car, as it is necessary. just thought, how freeing it would be - best of both, ya know?

The color part is pretty funny. I think it would be nice to have a lower gas bill definitely!

lower gas bill is awesome!
given my husband now has the longest commute he ever had, tis great timing in buying the versa for him.
