This song, which I really ignored on Lost Dogs, and didn't catch onto until I saw it live in Chicago, is really amazing. Amazing, as in, really close to being one of my top 3-5 PJ songs ever. The distinct guitar opening, the lyrics, the raw emotion. Just a nearly perfect song. Sometimes I question how they decide what is a B-side and what makes the record. Aside from Backspacer, it's the song I can't stop listening to.

  • I agree that Sad is a terrific song. It is one of my favorites.
"I'll end up alone like I began..."

"You need the patience of like a National Geographic photographer sitting underneath the bush in a tent, trying to get a picture of zebras fucking or something for the first time." -Eddie Vedder
  • It's a fucking awsome tune! Haven't heard live yet. Hope maybe night one or 3 in Philly.

Sad was one of the best "new" songs on Lost Dogs.

A real mystery why it wasn't on Binaural. It is something we may never know. I do beleive it would have perfect as the first single & may have been to song to put them back where they once were in terms of selling records & regaining the audiance they lost. Alot of people say PJ's music makes is depressing but it you look through it is really joyus & uplifting, the title may be Sad but this like Black is their most beautiful moment.

The music on it us uplifting, the three guitars going at it hell for leather.....It's beautiful, its jarring, and i love it, but those lyrics are pretty morose: :) like you said it's uplifting though, just like Black.

    all the photographs are peeling
and colors turn to gray, he's stayin'
in his room with memories for days, he faced
an undertow of futures laid to waste, embraced
by the loss of one he could not replace

and there's no reason that she'd pass
and there is no god with the plan, it's sad
and his holiness is proof, it's sad
he could only love you, it's sad

the door swings through a passing fable
a fate we may delay, we say
holding on, to live within our embrace

eleven nights, he laid in bed
hoping that dreams would bring her back, it's sad
and his holiness is proof, it's sad
he could only love you, it's sad

    holding his last breath, believing
    he'll make his way
    but she's not forgotten
    he's haunted
    he's searching for escape

if just one wish could bring her back, it's sent
and his holiness is proof, it's sad
he will always love you, it's sad

I was the same way bro....I always knew it was there but never paid any attention until Chicago

beautiful song....I agree that it is one of their masterpieces. Simple message yet delivered with so much emotion it leaves me in awe every time I hear it.

I would put it up there with I got Shit, Unthought Known, RVM as a defining piece of PJ's catalog

Yeah, i was just looking at that! :D

i copied them off a site, cos they dont have the full ones on the PJ site...ah well, I can never make out certain words on the album or live!!

Eleven nights is meant to be Lit A Match i think,

and some of the times instead of "Holiness" he says Lonliness. Oops, just spotted your corrections :)
  • I loved this song first time i herd it and still do . Some people on here say P J provides the soundtrack to their lives . Sad is definetly on it

even if those arent the real lyrics, some of them are pretty close, and it's very interesting to read them. it's probably in my top five favorite PJ tunes. One of the most interesting guitar progressions ever, in my opinion.

  • GREAT SONG!!!!!! ONE OF MY FAVORITES....
    From Montevideo, Uruguay.
  • Probably not on Binarual because its very similar lyrically to Parting Ways, also it doesnt really fit in the album.

Top 5 for sure, never get sick of it. 10/10 composition.

I don't know how you could consider it uplifting, there is absolutely no hope in this song. It's called sad because it's completely depressing

I've loved it the first time I heard it on Lost Dogs.

I too heard it in Chicago - but did anyone else notice this .... Eddie changed the lyrics to the point of view from a girl rather than a guy. For example, instead of "11 nights he layed in bed" I believe it was "11 nights she layed in bed," etc.

He messed up a couple of times (which happens), but for the most part, he changed the gender, which I thought was interesting.

Wow, it seems to have Binaural written all over it. The theme, the sound, guitar tones, arrangement. Would have been perfect on Binaural.

To have Greivance and Sad on the same record would be more than I could wish for. Two classic Ed tunes. It would be like Porch and RVM on the same record.

Definitely one of Ed's best compositions. I remember the leak from around 2003. Actually listened to it on the way to Boston III and Hershey and the version of Sad and Education from that leak were just a little bit better than what came out on Lost Dogs. That guitar slide from Mike when they flip the song around is amazing and it was even more pronounced on the leak.

Glad to see Sad played so much. Great version in San Fran 2006 indeed.
