What Binaural could've been

Rival
Sad
Education
Light Years
Nothing as it Seems
Insignificance
Of the Girl
Grievance
Fatal
Sleight of Hand
Parting Ways
Soon Forget (hidden track)

This would probably have been one of their best albums ever. Too bad the b-sides are better than some of the a-sides

  • I dont think that Binaural can be improved on
The songs you have added are great songs but i just dont think it would work and would spoil a masterpiece

I wouldn't change it in quite the same way, but there are definitely some swaps I'd make to get Sad/Education/Fatal on there.

I agree, Binaural is perfect as it is.

The band knows the Binaural b-sides are good, that's why they gave us Lost Dogs and still play some of those live.

But look at it this way, they could have just as easily never let those songs see the light of day and we wouldn't know about them.

really :o ,education is average and sad/fatal just wouldnt fit next to light years etc all my humble opinion of course, but i,m right :D

I really love Education but I can definitely understand what you mean about the other two on there.
I'm perhaps thinking too much in the mind of 'I prefer this to this, so it would be better' (e.g. Sad/Evacuation) when in reality the overall feel of the album may be ruined by such a change (Sad is a pretty heavy hitting song lyrically).

Sad and Light Years were about the same thing, so they wouldn't fit together, but Eddie could have rewritten the lyrics on one of them to change the topic..

I just wish they included Sad and Education.. I like the idea of making Soon Forget a hidden track. Evacuation and Rival should have been the b-sides.

Actually, Binaural could have used a few Backspacer songs to help spice it up! :D

I think that the fact that they're about the same thing is what makes them fit together.

My only change would Of The Girl swapped with Rival. It seems more balanced than the original. When i first heard Sad i was blown away & then when i read it was taken from the Binaural i couldn't beleive it wasn't on there. Good album but with Sad,Education & Fatal it would have been a great. If Sad had been the first single i really do think it would have been on of their biggest songs ever. Sad is in my top 10 PJ songs, in fact i am going to put on now.

Its my favourite of thiers. The best stuff not on it from that era that Ive heard were two longer instrumentals from Touring band and In the Moonlight. Sad, Fatal and Education etc are definatley better on lost dogs in my opinion. I like it the way it is but added instrumentals are always good.
  • You cannot cut Breakerfall and God's Dice!!! They bring the energy right off the bat. I say get rid of rival for Education and/or Sad. It is a great song but save it for a B-side.

Breakerfall & Gods' Dice are good songs.

Sad, Education & Fatal were all b-sides for a reason...

And Evacuation gets a terrible reputation constantly... I like the song, not my favorite on the album by any means but it's descent.

not far off. Parting Ways, not so great either. What about 'otherside'? that was part of the Binaural sessions, right? I hope they play that one live sometime

Other Side is from the Riot Act sessions.

Well, this post got everyone riled up. I think Binaural is a great album, but considering the great "b-sides" from those sessions, it could've been an all-time legendary album. Sad & Fatal are clearly superior to Breakerfall & Thin Air. Evacuation is rightfully a b-side the likes of Don't Gimme No Lip. Gods Dice is pretty good though - I probably could've left that on my original list.

I thought Fatal was left out of Riot Act. Am I wrong?

Being the three Riot Act b-sides were the three best songs from those sessions (in my opinions at least) i think it is a travesty they were left off that record.
I agree with cutting rival and evacuation on Binaural and putting in sad and fatal

"Binaural" is my least favorite Pearl Jam album, so there's definitely room for improvement. For the most part, I like the idea here, although I would keep "Evacuation" and relegate "Rival." "Rival" is monotonous. I'd open with "Sad," then "Evacuation," then the rest as you have it. Or move "Of The Girl" up to track 1.

"Soon Forget" has "hidden track" written all over it. I suggested this in another thread and was chastised for daring to suggest it was anything less than a masterpiece.

This thread prodded me to finally create a .m3u so that I could easily listen to the original track listing without moving any files!
  • I love Binaural just the way it is. This album is definitely one of my favorites, love how the themes of political, social, and personal unrest carry throughout the album - very dark and moody disc. I can't hear Insignificance w/o conjuring up the image of patrons in a bar playing their last tunes on the juke box while the world goes to hell outside - really reminds me of a great Douglas Adams or Kurt Vonnegut scenario from one of their books.

So, yeah, I love Binaural as is! I also love all of the great Lost Dog tracks from those Binaural sessions, Sad being one of their best ever! Now does anyone recall, will Binaural be one of the albums that gets the remastered/reissued treatment? I think that could make for a neat reissue - packaging all of the unreleased stuff, maybe the instrumentals from Touring Band (some of their best jams), and hopefully some other goodies that went unreleased. Can't wait for that one.
  • Also wanted to add that I just listened to the early Light Years demo for the first time in a while - love the final song, but the original demo is fantastic! It's like a different song! Would love to hear a better quality version of that outtake on the Binaural rerelease.
