 Oh God yes. Painful. They're all so cheery and swell. All the kids are beautiful, all the parents are nurturing. Gimmeafuckinbreak.

Nope... and we don't do the family picture holiday card thing over here really either ... just send shop bought x-mas cards.

EDIT: unlost ... we don't send them so don't need to do that ;)

What do single people do over there for holiday cards with no family to assemble?

Do you get together with friends for dinner if you don't have family close by?

We both grew up in the town we live in now, and our families are there. But since Mr. Unlost's dad is increasingly confused, we really keep it low-key to avoid flustering him. Sometimes we just do brunch instead of a formal dinner. We haven't really figured it out yet for this year. His brother hosts a really nice dinner on Christmas Eve, and he always invites some people who have no place to go. (His brother and sister-in-law are angels like that, they seem to find these lost souls and get involved with making sure they're okay.)

Re. the tree, Mr. Unlost strongly prefers a real one. I sometimes would rather a fake one, but the real one makes him happy. We usually put it up a couple of weeks before. And we put a gate around it to keep the unlost dogs away.

One year I kept finding broken ornaments on the couch. Then I happend to peek around the kitchen doorway, and saw Sweet Pea jump up on the couch, lean wayyyy over, and carefully sniff several ornaments on the adjacent tree. She clearly was considering them all, then oh so gently took one in her teeth and eased it off the branch. She settled down, preparing to enjoy a nice chew, when I said, "Hey!" and she almost jumped out of her tricolored skin. Subsequently we relocated the tree to the foyer and now we put a gate around it.

Have you ever had a Christmas tree (or menorah, as applicable) related disaster?

  • Letting my kids buy one new Ornament for the tree.
My Mom did it with us...when we moved out we all had enough ornaments for our own tree.

We're not great cooks, I'm afraid. But I can create an entirely from scratch Thanksgiving dinner that would blow you away, complete with juniper brined roast turkey. It's my one culinary effort for the year.

Mr. Unlost makes a nice mac and cheese.

How do you like your popovers?

I learned yesterday they are like Yorkshire Puddings ... I only know one way of making Yorkshire Puddings (although we make different shapes/sizes)

    What is your speciality?
