my sister-in-law called me and was excited that she heard the new Pearl Jam song, The Fixer and she downloaded it from iTunes... she asked to burn my CD. I told her that since she is at Target several times a week, that she should pick up a copy instead and support the band. I even told her that if she hated the album, i would buy it back from her... to insure that her satisfaction was guaranteed! My wife spoke to her sister and then called me to give me hell about that...

Am I wrong? And please dont tell me that copying CD's is illegal... i know that but, we have all done that in the past. so please no pious responses...

What type of answer are you actually looking for here? You know it's wrong, you know how everyone will react here, so maybe I'm lost on what your point is.

You should support your band. I agree. She should buy it. I actually downloaded backspacer from a Russian website to hear it, but still bought it at Target and downloaded it for my Ipod. Support your band!

  • Not at all. I burned a copy for my friend under the condition that she would go to Target and buy it if she liked it. She loved it and went and bought her own the next day.

Interesting thought to ponder. I don't burn CD's, but if I did, I would feel comfortable burning copies for someone who had absolutely no interest in buying the album. That way you are promoting the band and introducing a new fan to the fold.

However, if I had a friend who was planning on buying the album and I said, "forget it, I'll just burn you one", then that would be wrong IMO.

Those are just my personal thoughts, I try not to judge others on choices they make, although it's hard sometimes. ;)
  • A good relative wouldve burnt a copy

I'm always amazed at how reluctant some people are to spend 12 bucks to buy a CD. What is the worst-case scenario? You listen to the CD once, can't stand it, and are out 12 bucks? More likely, you will enjoy the album, or at least some of tracks, and you own it forever. I mean, it's 12 bucks. The same people don't hesitate to spend 12 bucks on a movie ticket, even though the movie is over in two hours and may not even end up being enjoyable.

In the grand scheme of things, a CD is one of the best values out there. For 12 bucks, you get something that might give you a hundred hours of enjoyment.
I gather speed from you fucking with me.

I dont think you did anything wrong (not that you need any of us to validate it for you). That said, there are MANY MANY people here there and everywhere that share boots or purchase sets of boots and then share amongst themselves but wont actually admit it. Still supporting the band, just doing in a bit more inexpensive way is all. PJLLC would be VERY VERY naive to think that this didnt...doesnt...wont...and will happen. Carry on Mr. Benben! Hope you are well my friend ;-)

  • i loaned my extra copy to 3 people already, they may or may not have burned it - if it's a choice between them hearing the music or not, meaning if they aren't going to buy it, I feel like spreading the love around. it's not like it's costing PJ album sales - if anything, i'll turn somebody on and they will go buy more music. if not, they wouldn't have made the purchase on their own anyway. it's the way of the world in music these days. people don't buy music like they used to. might as well get them listening somehow - all three of these people in my case have never been to a PJ show - now that they've listened to BS, they are talking about going to Philly. so PJ will make more money of their tickets than they would have off the album that was never purchased.

    you obviously hate your family.

I ripped a bunch of cds for people that didn't even ask for them.

The same people who burn illegal CD's are probably the same people who complain about high ticket prices. These days because of technology the bands dont make as much money on album sales so they make up for it with higher ticket prices. They need to make their money one way or another. I would have told her to download the whole CD from Itunes and pay for it herself.
