I have to do a 6-8 page paper criticizing a speech and using the Neo-Aristotelian concepts of rhetoric (Communications).

I'm using Eddie's REM Hall of Fame speech because it's the only thing that's appropriate as well as interesting. (Ramones was too long)

I have to:
- Critique the speech using Neo-Aristotelian methodology
- Use the cannons of rhetoric
- The effectiveness of the speech
- Criticize the speech to analyze appeals, interpret different strategies, and evaluate impacts of the speech

I'm not coming on here asking for someone to do my paper, I'm just asking if anyone who has any Communications/Rhetoric background to give me some pointers. This is my first "Rhetoric" class, and it sucks! It's just a bunch of crap floating in the air.

I know a little about this...I was in school a long time ago and was actually in a speech writing class in law school that had to do with grammar, logic, and rhetoric...The Trivium.

Analysing the cannons should be easy. I would love to read your paper after, though. I know Eddie is a songwriter, but not a professional one, you know. So his speech might be easy to professionally tear apart, except for the delivery. Invention - finding that persuasive way to present, Arrangement - did the organization make sense, Style - correct language used, Memory - did he practice, Delivery - gestures, vocal tone, etc.

Aristotle says that "rhetoric is the counterpart of dialectic." Rhetoric is used in pratical matters, not theoretical ones. It is civic minded...a human art or skill to persuade. I always took it that emotional appeal was the main factor.

There are three types of rhetorical proof, ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos will be easy to proof, well, cause it's Eddie, and his character and credibility on the subject of the speech are believeable, and he surely influenced the audience. (wonder if there is a youtube). Pathos, I can't think of anyone else who can emotionally appeal to an audience more than Eddie, especially through his storytelling and presentation. I would have to go back and read the speech, but logos has to do with reasoning...did he use historical example to prove that REM was worth being deducted into the HOF, for example. lol!
  • You know more then I do...thanks!
