Writing To Senators/Congressmen

Anyone had any success when writing to their respective senators or congressmen?

Did you get a personal response? Did you get a form letter? Phone call?

I'm stair-stepping my efforts to get a piece of legislation passed. I started with email, now I'm on to physical letters and will eventually move onto setting up meetings.

Just looking to hear about your experiences.

Cheers,

PBM

I just started doing the same so not much experience - the response I got was immediate- form type but did tell me to call if it was something that needed immediate attention.
Phone calls may be best but I'm afraid they'll want something from me ($$)

    Good for you!

I've gotten emails, some felt like form letters, and others felt more personal. And on one issue where I wrote a couple personal letters, where I got a few calls from his assistant. So, you definitely can get personal feedback especially if, like you, you keep at it. Good luck!!

I don't expect contact from senators or congressmen themselves, but assistants are a great step.

My letters explain which piece of legislation I would like them to co-sponsor and then tell them how this bill effects me. Hopefully, I'll get a response!

I'll send out my letters today.

several years ago i got a really cheesy form letter from kit bond, R MO complete with a stamped signature when i wrote him before the vote to authorize war in iraq. more recentlyi got a form letter from roy blount r, mo about some legislation i wrote him about. conversely, i got personal email replies from william lacy clay and sen claire mccaskill both D MO. i know these were personal because they referenced specific things from my letters that i had written. its a crapshoot. those people are getting as many letters and phone calls as every so i can expect the form letters, but its nice to get personal correspondence, if even from a staffer. at least i know they read it and heard my voice.

I was talking to some other advocacy volunteers that I work with and they mentioned email is working better for them. Sometimes physical letters take a long time to get to the person you're trying to reach and they may have to be inspected as well.

    Food for thought.
