Writing To Senators/Congressmen

Anyone had any success when writing to their respective senators or congressmen?
Did you get a personal response? Did you get a form letter? Phone call?
I'm stair-stepping my efforts to get a piece of legislation passed. I started with email, now I'm on to physical letters and will eventually move onto setting up meetings.
Just looking to hear about your experiences.
Cheers,

I'm going to explore all avenues. I'll send emails, snail-mail letters and, eventually, make phone calls to set up meetings.
In many cases, I've heard it's better to meet with assistants because they take thorough notes in order to pass along to their boss. So, in that respect, it's actually better to meet with an assistant.

I think if you communicate with your legislators as if you are attempting to "work with them" instead of giving your opinion you will get a better response. Make sure you don't bug them, but yet follow-up with them, find out why they would be opposed, what problems there may be with the legislation, etc. and if there is anything you can do to help with that. Provide them with lots of information of how it would be a good thing to co-sponsor the bill and that it can't hurt them if they do. Let them get to know you in a nice/informative way.
