I still go with "I Got Id." I remember when they started playing it on 93.7 The Edge here in the Twin Cities. I knew it wasn't on "Vitalogy" so the songs origin was a mystery to me (same with Ledbetter). Ahh, the good old pre-Internet days before we knew everything about everything 5 months before it came out.
So this life is sacrifice...

I'm pretty sure the radio is the reason it is called i got id.
I got shit is the name the band went with but you can't have them saing that on the radio.

+1 for the old mosh people of the postcard days when a call to your PJ buddies was either urine or I got shit, LOL!

I do remember the days before the net, but I always compulsively checked the record store bins and indie shops. This meant that I found the b sides fairly quickly.
The radio dj's got sick of explaining it to people I know that. "For the las time, it's on the Jeremy CD single" One guy I listened to even said he wouldn't play it for that reason alone.
Now you would just search the net. Having lived through the dark days of limited availibility I am much happier now even if I am surprised less.
edit: obviously referring to yellow ledbetter. I remember learning it was I got shit from either an interview or a foriegn boot.
I called it I got I.D. for the longest time!
as did i, and because of it, i thought it was about a sobriety test
"oh i walked the line when you held my hand that night" he's walking along the line on the street, he can't keep his balance and the cop lends him a hand (just to prove he's drunk)...
"oh i walked the line when you held me in that night" he's arrested for DUI and he spends the night in jail...
"i got memories i got shit" his reason for drinking...
but then i learned it was id and then later shit, and then i dumped my whole sobriety test theory...
so i'm going by I Got Shit because he says the actual line in the song
it could be just what the band calls it though...like the band calls Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town just Small Town...when they make their set lists it's not usually complete titles....i would go to the actual copy write and publishing papers to get the real name...
however that all being said, i find that given2fly23 has the most compelling evidence so far
They are both correct titles. Just like Elderly Woman and Small Town.
