Why no love for this song? Having a tough time figuring this one out. For me it is just as good as unthought known. I will say it was one of the last songs off the whole album that clicked with me. Its now the one I replay the most. Not a country fan at all but it has that feel for me and its what caught my interest the most....weird. Has this songs legacy already been written by initial reactions? Will it gain more appreciation over time? Or is it just my personal taste (Vitalogy and No code are my #1 and #2 favs)

  • I appreciate it quite a bit, actually. Didn't love it at first though...but that has been the theme for several of the songs on this album for me. Johnny Guitar? Hated it the first several times. Now, I can't get it out of my head.

  • I like this song...but I can't get over how much better it could have been. The lyrics are some of Eddie's best....and while I don't think the album version ruined it, I just think it was fine the way it was.
  • It has taken me some time to warm up to this song. I didn't really "dislike" it but I wasn't a huge fan. It also took me a while to warm up to Force of Nature (which I'm still trying to get into, although I do find myself humming the tune from time to time) and Supersonic. I don't think it comes even close to Unthought Known. That, Just Breathe and more recently The End have become my absolute favorite songs on the album. But I think that the more I listen to it the more into it I am. So who knows, maybe I'll become a huge fan of this song in time but for now I think it's a "pretty good but not great"...

What were you're expectations? I never got a chance to hear it before the album was released. Hearing Got Some on Conan built some expectations for me that I battled slightly when I heared the studio version. The two don't differ much but I really mikes solo on Conan and was hoping for something more similar. Like em both tho

  • least favorite on the album maybe most favorite for the lyrics but the demo is the prettier twin. Its just too much is going on in the whole band version and the 80s keyboard is quite ruining. Should have put the demo version on backspacer wouldnt have set itself apart from the end or just breath but I think it would have been liked more.

for me its too much of a buzzkill after Supersonic..
Life has nothing to do with killing time.
    So why be satisfied?

Interesting... hearing that for the first time I perfer the album version. Expectations have a big effect on listening to new music.
  • the demo version is SO amazing for "Speed of Sound" PJ should have left it an acoustic track kind of like "Just Breath" Having Matt play his contemporary drum beat over this one ruined the orginal grove the demo had as an acoustic track. I love the song now only because I know how it sounded just Ed solo when it was written. Thats really the only way I can tolerate it on Backspacer. I love the lyrics, but the band really didn't do this one justice in the studio which is too bad, because Ed really wrote a killer song here.
looking up...wondering if there is anything that you cannot do....
  • Fair enough....
  • i read all these posts for the last couple of weeks how the demo version was better than the album version - but didn't bother to seek out the demo. thanks to the person who posted it. i do like the demo version, but it's not a drastic difference to me. like them both, but would not be in my top 5 off the album either way.
  • It's been growing on me over the past week. If only because it sounds unlike any other PJ songs that have come before it. A unique song at this stage of their career should be appreciated. After Riot Act every PJ song has pretty much sounded like 5 other PJ songs that have come before. Speed Of Sound breaks the mold. Plus I love how it builds towards the end. The demo doesn't build the way the album version does.

You're so right about the build at the end. It's amazing. See thats where I think the entire band should have came in full, but if they just had of left the vers. acoutic like on the demo, but then built with the band for the chorus, and outro that would have been huge!

  • Even Meatloaf thinks its a melodramatic, cringeworthy mess! bwahahahahahahahah!

even if it didnt suck it would be ruined by the way Eddie says 'Sound'
