After Backspacer reached the #1 spot in the US, NZ and Australia, and sells good numbers everywhere else too, they should release a second single soon. Otherwise, the album could die (saleswise) after a few weeks.
A good 2nd single is important now.

I see two candidates:
Force of Nature - The best song on Backspacer, which would get tons of airplay on rock radio.
Just Breathe - It has the biggest potential of becoming a radio hit. It will reach a wider audience since it won't just be played on rock radio.

I hope they go for JB as 2nd single, followed by FoN as 3rd release.

I think Just Breathe would be no good as a single. Its actually one I am tending to skip when I Backspace.

I think its gotta be Got Some.

The other really good ones on the record... Amongst and Unthought... have too long a build for radio. A common problem with PJ epic tracks.

Got Some is EASILY the most radio accessible song on the album. It would blow up on Alternative Rock Radio and attract YOUNGER fans (which is exactly what the band is trying to do with this album)

It would be even more effective if they also released Just Breathe as a single on TOP 40 Radio simultaneously. This song has hit potential and the only way to increase sales is to have a CROSSOVER hit. This will achieve this.

If the Fixer is the only single, the ablum falls out of the Billboard 200 in 4 weeks. Just saying.
  • Got Some would be a good single choice too.
But, unlike Just Breathe, it won't have a big impact on non-Pearl Jam fans.

I thought it was established that Just Breathe was the second single?
Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...

    That is a great idea!
The release of both songs simultaneously would cover a lot of potential listeners.

Got some already on the radio all the time in Portland. To me that would seem like a second single to me. Although Force of Nature on the radio would kick ass. I wonder why they haven't played it yet?
  • if you gents will remember, the original b-side to the fixer single was got some. it was yanked somewhere along the timeline and replaced with supersonic. it's likely pearl jam saw potential as a single in the future.

Definately Force of Nature. They need a catchy tune to lure more fans and I believe this will do it.

Unthought Known was added at two Active Rock Stations this week (one of which being in Seattle-KISW). Doesn't mean it is the next single...just information.

Unthought Known, Amongst the Waves and Just Breathe were among the songs added at the Triple A format this week. Amongst the Waves received the most (4) including WXRT in Chicago.

  • Yes,they really need to release the new single soon or I`m afraid Backspacer is gonna loose some steam with some of the newer fans. That's just how it is now days. You have to have a new single out every 11/2 to 2 months to keep selling your current album. Hell, we all got are first listen of "The Fixer" back on 7-21-09!!!!! Seems like ages ago already.
  • I've been on the Force of Nature bandwagon for a while now. I love the song and I think it would do well.

I can definitely see the band wanting this as the next single. Actually, to be honest, sometimes I have no f'ing idea what they are thinking when they release singles. IMO, they have made some terrible decisions when they pick their singles. And Im not saying these are bad songs or that I dont like them, im just saying they are bad singles:
    Spin the Black Circle
    Who You Are
    Nothing As It Seems
    Save You
    Love Boat Captain
    Life Wasted
    Gone
Some would say World Wide Suicide, though I liked it.

And some people think they released bad singles on purpose to curve their popularity.

  • There was an HMV AD last week in The UK advertising The Backspacer Album. They played Got Some, The Fixer And Just Breathe.

My guess is Just Breathe or Got Some will probably be the next single

I for the most part agree with you here....

Who you are was flat out weird as a single.

Nothing as it seems. Very Bad single choice.

Save you ... sorta bad but that song kinda rocks. Not their best. Definitely not the best on that album.

WORST SINGLE EVER GOES TO... Nothing as it seems.

I think Nothing As It Seems is the worst single too. IMO, its a momentum killer when its played live too.

    Agree 100%.

Not a great song... although sometimes cool cuz it's eerie and weird. But for the most part not one of my favorites... but there are versions that are dope... Like Bennyroya.

I believe The Fixer was added to some Hot AC stations a couple of weeks ago. And I don't think there's going to be a definitive second single. I mean almost every song on the album is being played. It was so much easier when there was a cassette/cd/45 coming out.
