It's official - Backspacer is #1

190k sold in the first week. Their first #1 since No Code.
For what it's worth, congrats to the band! I know they (and we) do not put a lot of stock into sales because it is not a true reflection on the quality of music (often it's an inverse relationship), but I think it is a cool thing for them to have a #1 album 9 albums and 18 years into their recording career.

its not the target or rockband thing either. This album really deserves to be heard (and bought)

Congrats Pearl Jam!!
It seems to me that PJ now puts more stock into sales than they did before. Not in a sell out kind of way, just that they want this record to be heard. I say this after having just read the Spin article. This is definitely a more positive record and perhaps this says something about their fans and society. Though the record business is not the same and maybe this doesn't represent a large amount of records sold according to past sales. But for a rock band to sell this amount in today's shitty music climate is very high.
If they want to continue to sell more of this record though, they will release another single off Backspacer or this album will die.
Why has it taken them so long to release Got Some?
It's true that "Riot Act" sold 166,000 copies its first week-- fewer than "Backspacer"-- but the lowest first-week sales total for any Pearl Jam album (by far) is, naturally, "Ten," which had no street awareness when it was released in August 1991. "Ten" did not sell enough albums in any week to crack the top 200 until January 1992. I don't know that the numbers are publicly available, but I'd be shocked if "Ten" sold even 5,000 copies its first week.
I'm on board with that approach. I love being excited about hearing their new material at a concert. If they don't sell albums, they're going to stop making them at some point. And that would be boring to go to their shows year after year hearing all old stuff. A #1 album (even if it's only for a week) gets me more excited to see them play live.
Backspacer also went to #1 in Australia and New Zealand.
And Canada is yet to come...
Backspacer is a great album that really deserves the success.
As for the first week US numbers, we'll know exactly tomorrow when we get the soundscan results.
By the way, the new album entered the german album charts at #3. This is the best Pearl Jam Chart entry ever here.
To keep the album in the charts, they should release a second single soon!
6/30/98 Minneapolis, 10/8/00 East Troy (Brrrr!), 6/16/03 St. Paul, 6/27/06 St. Paul
It's a nice total, but nothing outlandish. Coldplay sold 721,000 copies of "Viva La Vida, or Death And All His Friends" in the first week. Linkin Park sold 625,000 copies of "Minutes to Midnight" in the first week. U2 sold 484,000 copies of "No Line On The Horizon" in the first week.
Those are just the rock bands. Eminem sold 608,000 copies of "Relapse" the first week. Jay-Z sold 476,000 copies of "The Blueprint 3" in the first week (and that probably underestimates the real demand because the release date was moved up at the last minute and the first-week sales were skewed downward as a result).
I agree... but it seems like bands usually let a single work for them for MONTHS. So I'd expect they keep riding the fixer but I hope they do release something soon.
What do you think? Got Some? Or... Amongst the Waves? Johnny Guitar?

This quote from the Spin interview pretty much sums up that whole mentality for me, which I support 10000%! I am super stoked that my favorite band for the last 18 years is still able to put out an album that debuts at #1 in the first week! I remember listening to them when I was younger, and Eddie was younger and still so angst-y, and I lived in fear that PJ would break up, or stop making new music. A stupid thing to fear, yes, but nonetheless, I did...So, cheers for us fans, and cheers for the band!

Nevertheless, sales are sales and they still have 6 of the top 50 best-selling albums this week, an impressive feat, as you note. Of course, this is a band that once held down all five positions in the top five of the singles chart (in 1964).

I am just thrilled to bits for the band and the fans that their album (and the first "self- released") is at the top for this week in the UNITED STATES.
I think PJ already sold Target a million at $5 a pop, or $5 million
