fast vs slow vs mid-tempo, over the years

do you have a preference, or do they compliment each other?
I like that their rockers have successfully morphed from angry, rage driven to head bobbing fun songs. PJ has always been consistently good at rocking out. the new ones are a bit more slick, but still fun. GSMF is insane.
Slow songs are pretty much a given to be great... when they are simple Eddie ballads. I really hate the overworked ones like Inside Job or Speed of Sound. but Ed + guitar + subtle band additions = solid gold! Just Breathe is an instant classic.
i'm sure i'll have some disagreement here, but their mid tempo ones don't do it for me much anymore. The mid tempo stuff on the last few albums are too moderate rock music for old people. I would classify Ten or the big anthems like Immortality or GTF as furious hard rock, but Army Reserve or ATW definitely aren't. They are adult contemporary (something the band would have shuttered at years ago, now dont seem to mind). Its just a personal preference for me, as i dont think they are bad songs necassarily, but i like my mid tempo PJ with more edge and less polish. A lot of PJ fans eat this stuff up though. good for them.
I think Backspacer is a prime example of everything i like about them, and some of the things i dont. While i don't think everything they do is perfect, i do think they have adapted their sound remarkably well, now if they can just inject a little ferocity into their anthems...
