Neil Young where to continue... ?

I love Neil Young... I have a lot of his albums already but he has such a large body of work that I'm kind of at a loss where to go next. I have MOST of his material from the 90's and this decade and his more popular work from the early part of his solo career... My question is where should I go next?

These are the albums I have by him:

Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
After the Gold Rush
Harvest
Zuma
Re-ac-tor
Ragged Glory
Harvest Moon
Sleeps With Angels
Mirror Ball
Silver & Gold
Greendale
Living with War
Chrome Dreams II
Fork in the Road

  • Tonight's the Night
Live Rust and/or Rust Never Sleeps
    Weld
  • I don't see On the Beach on your list. For my money that is hands down his best album ever. Stone cold classic. Revolution Blues is worth the price of that disc alone!! I can't rave enough about that album. It's probably in my all time top 5 or at least 10 albums.

    Tonight's the Night
Live Rust and/or Rust Never Sleeps
    Weld

Get On the Beach first, then these.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

On the Beach and Tonight's the Night are must-listens, they both contain some of his best work.
  • "American Stars & Bars" is probably my favorite NY album.

"Comes A Time" is a breezy, feel-good record with country overtones.

    "Rust Never Sleeps" is essential.

Also, you must get the "ditch" trilogy:
    "Time Fades Away"
    "Tonights The Night"
    "On The Beach"

Basically all of his albums up to "Rust Never Sleeps" are must haves.

These are all in print and essential.

    On The Beach
    Tonight's The Night
    Rust Never Sleeps

Time Fades Away is also essential but is out of print. There are used vinyl originals and also CDR copies of an HDCD remaster that was pressed but never released.

I would add the Fillmore show release to do the electric/acoustic bookend
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.
  • Would you believe I am going to say On the Beach and Tonight's the Night?

On the Beach would probably be amongst my favourite dozen albums by anyone.
Now I'm livin' out here on the beach,
but those seagulls are still out of reach.

Don't be shy about picking up the DVD Heart of Gold which is NY Live at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Worth it's weight in Gold. ( No pun intended)

I saw him live a few months back at Hyde Park....WOW!!! This man can still rock!
BTW, does anyone own Archives Vol. 1? Only for the hardcore fans?
  • The Archives are essential for any Neil Young fan. There's a lot of previously released material but the remastering and audio quality is amazing. And most of the unreleased stuff is priceless (some think the first Early Years disc is worth listening to only once but there is a lot of quality stuff on there).

yeah..saw him for the first time this past december and it was epic...i want to get the archives set but it's just so much cash and i would only want the bluray version..give it another year or so and i'll pick it up..definitely wanna see him at least one more time before he hangs it up.
