i cant wait to hit a bunch of them in the spring on my road trip

everyone should take advantage of these parks and go enjoy them, TV shows do not do them justice. America can be VERY beautiful, usually the farther away you get from people the better

p.s. i'm not even kidding

but its a truly marvelous and wondrous thing around the world.. the national park idea i mean... 8-)
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

When I lived in Arizona, we took a week long driving trip to Zion national Park.

I would rate thsi waaayyyyy ahead of the Grand Canyon. It was one of the most beuatiful things I have ever seen.

what was great about the DV-R, was being able to watch shows on YOUR timetable, not the tv schedule. i am sure we could catch it, but it's simply a quesytion of if we want to watch tv at the particular time it's oon, we shall see.....but if not, i am sure it will eventually get released on DVD and we can rent it. so it's all good.... 8-)

edit - just added it to the netflix queue!
it is released on DVD october 6th for those interested....

I tried to watch that last night, but they were talking about the parks in religious terms and talking about worshiping nature and I turned it off.

It doesn't bother me that they were doing that other than I just thought it was odd and I decided not to watch it.

You know what though, that was just one person's opinion. Don't let it prevent you from enjoying this documentary. I think the narrarator does a good job of not pissing off Christians with too many worshipping nature and evolution type comments. For many people, experiencing these places of natural beauty is the equivalent of "seeing god".

Um, were you channel surfing or drinking a lot of beer while you were watching?

They were talking about a lot of the common philosophical and religious beliefs of the 18th and 19th centuries and how that figured into the idea of setting aside tracts of wilderness. Also, about how John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club, who had an enormous influence on the National Parks movement, was raised by a cruel, strict father who was a Presbyterian minister. In Muir's writings he talked about finding God in the natural world, very much the opposite of what he'd been raised to believe.

But I think you missed the point (big time) if you thought it had a religious slant. ;)

I just finished watching it, looks like Burns did a good job with this stuff. And the two national parks I've been (Yosemite and Mt. Rainier) are incredible. Probably my most favorite thing about Rainier was not getting cell phone service for a few hours and having no idea what was going on outside of there.

  • I personally think God isn't in any church. It is nature.

I personally moved to Washington to see beautiful landscapes. I need that for my health. It creates a spirit in me that did not exist in modern city culture before.

    Excellent program.

Well - I only watched if for about 2 minutes so I probably didn't give it a chance.

What I saw didn't bother me from a religious standpoint - it just happened to be religious. I guess what I'm saying is I didn't like the angle they took and thought it made what they were trying to show odd.

I wasn't offended by it in the least. Just didn't like how the show was put together...in the one minute I watched it.

OK, sounds like maybe you caught it when they were quoting from the writings of John Muir. He started keeping a journal as an adult and he spent years hiking through Yosemite before it became a park. He also studied the rock formations, plants, animals, glaciers. His writings are full of descriptions about how God is in nature and everything around us.

Muir's father was a minister who made his son memorize the Bible. I think they said that by the time he was 12 he knew three-fourths of the Old Testament and ALL of the New Testament by heart. So finding God in nature was a big switcheroo for him.

But I think the point was also that it was a very American outlook at the time, along with the idea of setting aside wilderness as a refuge for everyone, not just a few wealthy people.
