Does Pearl Jam Pay ESPN For Promoting Backspacer?

I am just curious about this.

ESPN uses a lot of the new songs ALL the time recently for intro's and outro's to commercials, highlight packages on sportscenter and more. So, I was just wondering if Pearl Jam or the whoever pays for that as promotion for the new cd?

I noticed approximately the same amount of promotion when Metallica released Death Magnetic too.

  • normally on a synch deal its the band that gets paid...
  • well that is what advertising is, paying somebody to endorse your name...Pearl Jam isn't only a band, it's a business, they need to get word out other than through word of mouth by 10 clubbers, hense target giving them publicity, ESPN and Fox Sports endorsements, without a promotion company doing it for them, they struck deals doing this...it explains a lot, i wouldn't find PJ selling themselves to Target for those commercials, but they are using Target to advertise themselves....so to answer your question, i'm sure PJ or someone is paying ESPN to have their music played...mainstream popularity has always been an issue during the latter half of PJ's career, they are trying to fix that (no pun intended)
  • all they play are the guitar riffs. theres rarely any words played on air. if i heard it for the first time and thought it sounded good, how would you even know it was pearl jam? only once and a while do they display the pearl jam backspacer text in tiny print at the bottom

As stated in an above post, ESPN pays for the right to use the music.....its called a sync license.

    PJ loves ESPN

which is a shame, because even though it's a necessary evil, ESPN sucks.

Truth. I live in CT and I have a bunch of friends that work for ESPN, everyone at ESPN is in the fan club. Just go to ESPN.com, every so often a columnist writes some sports article and relates it to pearl jam. One time this guy did this whole march madness thing relating a shitload of the teams to PJ songs. It was cool.

hey now, they pay my bills. and yes to those talking about a sync license. ESPN paid for 6 songs to be used in all entities for a month. The company does it with a lot of bands (AC/DC and Green Day last year) and also currently has one with Dave Matthews Band during college football coverage.

ESPN has become a marketing station. They show highlights that promote the stuff they are going to show. They have "news" shows and talk shows that discuss mainly, what ESPN broadcasts.

Case in point ... they don't show hockey games, thus, why you have to search long and hard to find good hockey highlights and news on that station ... sure, they have a token appearance from Barry Melrose once in a while, but, please ... they show more highlights of tennis than hockey, why? Because ESPN shows tennis matches.

It once was a real news station, but now, it's a marketing tool ... it's just become a shell of its former self.

this is true to an extent...i love ESPN except it should be called the All Football Network...oh yeah and some other sports too...it seems like you can't go through a full episode of Sportcenter without hearing something involving football...even DEEP into the off season, it's sickening...there's only baseball (which is America's Past-Time by the way) during the season and some, but not a lot of off season discussion...but in the off season, it seems like football is still heavy in discussion...basketball too...though not that bad...but i feel ESPN is too heavy on the football

i've always wondered how people had new song names as their s/n.

during the va tech game they played a new pj clip and put their name and sone title in the corner of the screen.

  • A friend of mine is actually a Supervising Producer for Sportscenter... and they pay a fee. I think someone already mentioned it's called a synch fee. When I worked in news we paid an ASCAP fee and could use whatever we wanted, it was really up to the producer of the show.

Also, a lot of the people working on SC are huge PJ fans, they've always used they're music a lot. I, of course, love that!

  • ESPN went downhill when Disney bought them. I hate how they hyped every MNF like its the superbowl last year. its not as bad now but MNF isn't as good since it hit ESPN.

and If they hype the Cowboys and any New England team any more i'm gonna puke.

I think the fact that ESPN has backed PJ's music so much speaks volumes about the awesomeness of ESPN... I was actually very happy to see that two things I really like crossed paths the way they have... just goes to show that people will complain no matter what.

you must be a hockey fan... just a guess. If you're not a hockey fan... someone was griping about it... but how many people around are actually into hockey? I guess if I were into hockey I would empathize more with all the bitterness that I'm hearing...but as it is, I actually zone out whenever ESPN does cover hockey... I'm just not interested... and I don't think I'm alone...I'm not trying to "diss" hockey... I just didn't grow up on it... and I think only a small percentage of sports fans did... the NHL seems to be dying...

ESPN covers what people want to see... is my point. ESPN can't possibly be all things to all people, but I think they do a pretty damn good job....someone criticized ESPN for showing too much football... they show it because football is the most popular sport in the country. I also happen to be very into watching pro football... so I guess it works out for me.

I love ESPN... and I find what they've done to be very impressive...they've created a whole network out of covering sports news... which had never been done before

I just felt like I had to come to bat for ESPN... they're my boys... or at least I feel some solidarity with the channel... I just don't like to hear a good thing criticized... kinda like hearing PJ criticized unfairly.

wow, this ESPN rant went on longer than I intended.... I think I'm gonna go watch Sportcenter.... maybe they'll play some Pearl Jam.

  • No No No. Media companies pay artists for use of the songs not the other way around. BMI and ASCAP prohibit artists and media companies from cutting side deals like that. For most bands, they pay a company to 'promote' the music to music buyers for the media companies and then the band gets paid a set rate per play depending on the size of the network in viewers. I assume pearl jam doesnt do much of that because they probably have a lot of fans in these organizations anyway.
