I’m having a problem accepting the fact that I think Avocado sucks. I love EVERY PJ album. I know many of you bash Riot Act and Backspacer but even these 2 albums are great in my opinion. Some albums took a while to grow on me and these ended up being my favorite. I was hoping that Backspacer wasn’t horrible like Avocado and in my opinion its not. Since I have been enjoying this new album its bothering me that there’s only one album out there I can’t stand. Not even one song…”generic” like many describe it. The lyrics seem cheesy and some songs start out great but something happens mid point through the song making me skip it. I can never make it through the entire album without saying "this sucks!" Anyways I want to give it another chance. Can some of you suggest your favorite live versions? I hope this helps me. I’m not giving up.

Inside Job from Dublin (2006) is pretty awesometastic. :) other than that, I don't know really. I'm not a huge fan of the whole Avocado myself. some songs I love (Inside Job, Come Back and Army Reserve), some songs I can take or leave.

everything on that album rocks when you see/hear it livet though. but when listening to boots, I might still skip my not-so-favourite songs.

I'm not sure if this is very helpful.

all in all, I really hope you'll find something to like in Avocado. :)
"Don't be faint-hearted, I have a solution! We shall go and commandeer some small craft, then drift at leisure until we happen upon another ideal place for our waterside supper with riparian entertainments."
  • You don't have to feel bad about, even though you're wrong ;)

There are some great songs on that album, and at the time it came out, I thought it was Ed's best job lyrically in a long, long time. Now, I think that honor goes to Bspacer.

But if you don't like it, you don't like it. Nobody says you have to.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
  • You like it or you don't what do want help with? How to like something?

I'm not saying I want to bc everybody else does...well many don't. Its just a gap in my life I want to fill.

There is a question near the end of my post. It asks "Can some of you suggest your favorite live versions?" Often when you hear them live it makes you appreciate the songs more. Geeeeeeez.
  • I don't like S/T either. I think it's a weak and uninspired moment. So you're not alone.

Wow...I have a hard time seeing where you are coming from. Life Wasted lyrically woke me up from a really bad place I was in...World Wide Suicide ALWAYS get me going and I can't help SCREAMING it, especially in the car. I cry whenever I hear Wasted Reprise. Severed Hand, Unemployable, Gone, Inside Job, Come Back...all powerful life, at least to me.

Live at the Gorge has a great WWS and Severed Hand. Wasted Reprise - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvsWCg_4Ax0

7-7-6 san diego...listen to the entire show. :)

Good luck in your endeavor! I hope you can hear a fraction of how some of the songs have touched me.

  • You cant force it man. If you dont like it, you dont like it. I feel that way about Riot Act. There are a couple songs I like, but thats it. Look at it this way. The fact that you like 8 of 9 albums from is AMAZING in itself. There isnt another band out there you can make that claim for. And I dont know if there is a single band out there that has ever had every album be universally liked.

  • Some albums come along at the perfect time in your life. That's how I felt about Yield and Riot Act.

    Good Point.
  • I love Unemployable, and they have been playing it regularly this tour. It's even more trenchant than when it came out.
The funny thing about that album is I loved it from the start. Binaural and Riot Act had to grow on me.
To each his own. It certainly is acceptable to not like any given record and still be a big fan of the band.
  • Oh, if you're looking for a live version of "Avocado", get the Torino 2006 show where they play the album straight through.

I just played s/t in its entirety after playing backspacer like 6 times in a row and i must say it compliments backspacer well. That said, I am struck by how much more concise and tight backspacer is, not to mention the production is superior. S/t has its share of jam outs and beauties too tho.
  • hey loyd that john denver is full of shit........ lol dude its very political so think that and the album is sick.. army reserve is about going off to war and leavn the fam and then never returning. come back just makes me like w t f who hasnt thought of that..

  • lloyd, s/t is not one of my favs either. i usually just listen to live bootleg versions of the songs, not the album. so, i recommend comatose from grand rapids 5.19.06, parachutes from the vic or portland 7.20.06, gone listen to the demo version. btw, i was not at any of these shows.
    good luck!
  • i must say i think S/T was and is my least favourite album, but it does provide a launching pad for backspacer. i think backspacer is more concise, better produced/mixed, and lacks some of the self-sabotaging incongruous verse-chorus combinations that plagued S/T (i know a lot of people adore it, but marker in the sand is a perfect example of a mismatch in verse and chorus). i felt that a lot of the songs could have been great but there was something about them that didn't quite click. comatose should be a cracker but feels hollow for some reason - i think it's the extreme compression and over-polished nature of it. i like life wasted and world wide suicide but they haven't really stuck with me long term. some of my fave's are: severed hand (the only rocker that feels like a complete song on the album i think), unemployable (catchy and quirky but also somehow familiar, with poignant lyrics for such a boppy number), army reserve and gone (although again, i feel like i should like them more than i do - maybe it's a production thing?). i also love the end of comeback with ed's mournful wailing (but it takes a long laboured time to get there), and same goes for inside job (just takes too long to get to the good part). so it's an album full of songs that are almost there but not quite. for me, backspacer is full of songs that work immediately - and i think brendan o'brien has a lot to do with as well.

Great description. I feel bits and pieces but most of the songs don't flow.
