Backspacer much better a week later
Just came to the board to post my positive experience with the album over the course of the week since it's been out... it's so funny how music can seem average at first and then grow... never fails to amaze me.
at first, even though I recognized that the lyrics were consistently great throughout, I thought there were maybe three solid songs on the album (Got Some, Just Breeathe, The Fixer- which I hated at first actually)...
Now, I really appreciate much of the album... self-titled took some time to grow on me too, but I would say Backspacer is a better PearlJam album... and more accessible.
I think the band should stick with Brendan O'brien from here on out.... experiment with the music sure, but not the producer anymore guys (that's my take anyway)
I now think Amongst the Waves and Unthought Known are beautiful songs (though the chorus in Amongst the Waves could be better in my opinion... though that opinion could change too)
Gonna See My Friend has surprisingly grown a lot on me... because the first time I heard it I thought it sounded very generic... sounded like Eddie was doing a Roger Daltry impression... but now I think the song is a solid rocker... I cranked it a couple times on the treadmill and it had me fired up... also I think the meaning of the line "going to see my friend" was lost on me initially... now I'm thinking it means going to see my friend to get some drugs so I can chill out and take my mind off of whatever frustration I'm dealing with.
At first I kinda rolled my eyes when I heard Johnny Guitar... but now I dig it and find myself singing it during the day....
An unexpected gem that has shocked me the most I think is "The End"... what a beautiful and powerful, and sad song... really tugs at the heartstrings... makes me want to live my life better... which is a pretty beautiful thing.
In the final analysis... I think this is a very good album... I like that Eddie did all the lyrics personally... I think they should keep things that way... that's pearljam to me... though I do like You Are from Riot Act.
I think I am ready to welcome this album as one of their very good albums... I don't think it is quite there with the greats (first 4, Yield is very very good also)... but I think it is in the same building.
And then there is Supersonic... this song sounded very generic to me at first... and it sounded like Stone barrowed some of the music from No Code for the guitar work... but last night it just began to click with me... and now I am really enjoying the song... a lot... very cool tune
This album reminds me of the early Pearl Jam in some ways... not that it sounds at all like Ten or anything... but the spirit and energy reminds me of the Pearl Jam that has been somehow missing over the last few... I don't really know how to explain it... but I was just pouring over the liner notes with the record playing trying to find out the lyrics so I could get as much meaning as possible.... reminded me of the early days.
