Grunge Godfathers Pearl Jam To Hit Number One Next Week After 13 Years

Grunge fans rejoice! According to Billboard magazine, multi-platinum recording artists Pearl Jam are poised to take the number one spot on the album chart for the first time in 13 years.

The group's last studio release, 2006's self-titled set, came in at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The band last graced the No. 1 slot way back in 1996, when "No Code" became its third chart-topper.

Industry insiders are strongly suggesting that their newest studio album, "Backspacer," could sell anywhere between 175,000 to 200,000 copies by week's end, dethroning current top seller, Jay-Z's "The Blueprint 3," which pushed 298,000 copies during the week ending September 20.

The new album is sold exclusively in the through Target, iTunes, Pearl Jam's Web site and independent retailers. This is the band's first release without a major label backing them.

I dig it. Not cause they are number one, but more cause more press will sell more albums, and get new listeners into the PJ fold.

    Spread the Jam baby!

  • Who would've thought ? ? never thought we'd see this happen again. It's just funny since Yield and Self-titled were better albums... go figure. Glad they beat Jay-z tho. Rock n roll shall never die

    Long live Rock!!

I am impressed, not only that it will be the #1 record, but that it will accomplish that feat via the distribution they chose.

I'd be curious to see the numbers of copies sold at independent record stores :geek:

    I hope that's true.

It's a beautiful cd. Lots of people should get to hear it!! :)

  • I wish they called it a number one record rather than CD... The term record doesn't reference delivery method (LP, CD, download). . . . . . I have the LP and CD.

I hate that term "Grunge Gods". So over it!
  • this is great to see - it's number 1 here in aus already, and i think it's a very accessible album for new fans which will help garner a new upswelling of PJ appreciation. as a few have said, the more appreciation, the bigger likelihood of our beloved PJ keepin on keepin on. may they thrive forever! ;)

This is a nice little article about the record hitting number 1.

It also shows what is apparently an alternate Backspacer CD cover. ;)

I couldn't find the "alternate" cover.

Is it linked off the Examiner article?

i think they were having a dig at the author of the article for showing a picture of the ten cover instead of the backspacer cover ;)

Sorry about that. It's not just that they show the cover of Ten. The caption for the picture is specific for Backspacer. :)
