S/T is flat out bad...Not a good record at all. That was Pearl Jam saying look we lost our edge lets try our asses of to be mainstream cock rock...They achieved that, but without the mainstream figuring them out. With Backspacer, they showcase what they are all about. Fun, energetic, and solid as a unit. The songs don't seem forced they flow naturally and in results they made something pretty special here. First PJ album that I can listen to front to back without wanting to hit the skip button because of a fillerish track or a bad one. Great album here.
What in the hell is "mainstream" or "cock rock" about S/T? Seriously. Think before you type, please.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
[quote="WisconsinPJ"you guys have obviously never lost anybody close to you...or else how can you NOT relate to the lyrics of Come Back???? they are perfect- it describes that feeling of loss and wanting someone back so badly, seeing them in dreams...beautiful song, how can you not hear & feel that?? you will someday....
oh and Avocado being flat out bad....thats plain foolish....to say that they forced it....even more foolish..great song writing with great lyrics..[/quote]
wow...really??? way to jump to conclusions. I think the arrangement sucks and I don't like the tempo--to me it sounds like a generic song. I'm pretty sure I didn't say that I didn't like the LYRICS
I love Inside Job but Come Back must rank as one of the worst PJ songs I've ever heard, my opinion anyway. Glad you like it but better than anything on Backspacer really?
A handful of the tracks on S/T measure up to Backspacer, this album has really put the cat among the pigeons hasn't it?
I agree with you on Come Back...it makes me shudder!
I'd gladly wait another 3 years if I got something as good as the 37 awesome minutes that is Backspacer :-)
Glad to hear I'm not on my own on that one, definitely a skipper that one. I just think Backspacer has shown the deficiencies of S/T. I know some rate Riot Act as their favourite, I can't get on board with that myself but each to his own. I have no problem with the lyric like someone said it's the arrangement, no it doesn't speak to me, those who get something from it fair play and yes I do have a soul Thank you!
Having lived with the record for a few weeks it for me at least is the strongest and most consistent since Yield. I don't think it is as good as YIeld, Vs or Vitalogy but I think the other albums definitely have competition, it betters the last 3 for me.
Yes it has been immediate but Just Breathe, Amongst The Waves & Unthought Known just sound like songs that will endure just like Black, Alive, RVM, Daughter, Indifference, Corduroy, Immortality Smile, PT, Off He Goes, practically all of Yield etc.
I just feel shivers when I listen to them, like all PJ' best
it wasnt intended to be crude...relax...and i did say or else why..etc. you said the song makes you shudder. thats pretty harsh. and i dont wish that pain on anybody, but everybody in life will experience human loss at some point..thats all i was saying
look...after a band releases an album it's not like they all immediately go working on the next. pearl jam did a massive world tour to support avocado. even after that, they still toured. they really have not taken a break. i think the liner notes says that b/s started recording in march. give them a break.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
Butthead: Huh huh.

right--it does make me shudder...doesn't really seem that harsh compared with 90% of the critiques of other songs on this board. When Ed sings "for youuu-oooooo to come back" it literally makes me shudder!
I've lost loved ones in my life but that doesn't mean that I have to love the music :-) reading the lyrics works for me!

Whoa. I love that part! Especially when Ed gets lower on the "come back" part. I'm not gay or anything, but ... damn that sounds sexy. It kind of makes me want to do him.

I think for me, it sounds like the song is trying too hard to be kinda bluesy or something...i know i'm the minority here...and i also know that I sing along to it when it's played live :-)
