Sonic Youth

Legendary Band. Still putting out records. Thurston Moore hasnt aged a day in 20 plus years. One of the most surreal experiences of my entire life is seeing them for the first time ever, at San Fran III, opening for PJ, and how crazy their set was, how their out of tune guitar stuff matched the background visuals they had going on behind them, and how unbelieveably rude the crowd was to Sonic Youth. People were booing and saying "bring PJ out". I know people were excited for PJ, but I mean come on people, its Sonic Youth!

Anyways, they still are doing their thing. The recent album made for Starbucks, the signing with Matador, the putting out of a new record, and appearing on Gilmore Girls a few years back.

yeah, i'm a fan. im sure i cant appreciate them as much as people who grew up with them ,but they are a very tight band, and i love that classic sloppy rock song sound. Even better is they're playing a brilliant venue near me soon, must score some tickets to that.

they're kinda like My Bloody Valentine that way too.
  • How awesome of a job does Mark Ibold have? Not only is he the drummer for the legendary Sonic Youth, but also for the legendary (and recently reunited) Pavement... both bands are top 10 bands for me...

Steve Shelley has been the Sonic Youth drummer for over 20 years. Mark Ibold helps out the band on some songs.
That said, I'm also a Pavement fan. I saw both bands on the same day at Lollapalooza '95. That was a fun experience.

My bad I meant to say bassist for SY & Drummer for Pavement in my original post.

He joined SY in 05 or 06 when Jim O'Rourke left the band... I know he played on The Eternal and has been considered a full time member since then.

But how cool is it to be in both of those bands.

I think it's finally time to immerse myself into their catalogue, any recommendations on where to start?

Lots of great stuff - to start maybe Daydream Nation, and then maybe Washing Machine as two representative samples of slightly different SY eras. Evol, Goo, Dirty, Experimental Jet Set, are all also good.

Yes, great band. I only have one buts it's the box set vinyl "Daydream Nation", a very cool package!

Will definitely have to dig into them more.

that box kick ass, I also have dirty and goo boxes all three first pressing from the early 2000, pity they disbanded, I'm a 1/4 to complete their discography, some day...

Goo is an awesome album! I really like Murray street. Sister is also great start there. Maybe I'm biased cause I did, but it was worth it.. Only chance I had to see them live, they canceled the show at ACL 2009. Saw PJ in 2000 for the first time, but super grass opened for the leg of the tour I saw. Cool band though.
