Hasn't seen a topic about this.

Excluding Speed of Sound.

Aren't the drums really good on this album? They are hard hitting and distinct. Reminds me of Vitalogy.

What do you think?

  • the production on the album was sound, bass drum is prolific in the mix.
  • This is definitely a Matt & Jeff album. The drums and bass are wonderful.

  • Definitely. I think Matt is the star in this one. The rest of the band is amazing as well, but matt stands out to me I think.

    Agreed!!

Matt and Jeff are kickin' my ass all around the room.
  • Unquestionably Matt's best record with Pearl Jam, he's on fucking fire!

I'm probably one of the most vocal critics of Matt's playing, particularly the way he changed up the playing of most of PJ's early catalog. I've been drumming 25 years, and have my opinions...

Matt's drumming on this album is fucking great! I wouldn't describe this album as being like Vitalogy, since his drumming style is worlds apart from Abbruzzese, but this is indeed a Matt album.

I'm intrigued when I hear Matt's playing on this album. It's truly brilliant.

Well, I haven't a drummer for 25 years :) But, I think the drums are allowed to take place on the album in a the same way as vitalogy and that they are distinct and "hard". Not as flat as on Riot Act etc.

Don't really know how to explain it. But maybe it's a BoB think. Really dig how the drums sound on both Vitalogy and Backspacer. Maybe I get flamed for talking about White Stripes but I love how the drums sound on their records, also distinct and hard... hmm...

yeah, on my last listen, I actually turned it up a bit because it seemed like the bass drum was rather prolific. Very awesome, very awesome. I love his weird drums on Got Some.

    Fair enough. :D

I think the drums on Backspacer are even more prominent and fuller than on Vitalogy. Vitalogy is very crisp, but I'll have to give a listen again because I don't think they're as full as on Backspacer.

BO'B is definitely the one to credit for how well it sounds, and Cameron is to credit how we'll it's played. I can't wait to hear what BO'B does to VS, Vitalogy and No Code assuming they remix them for a re-release.
