A need for reconciliation.

edited September 2009 in The Porch
It’s probably fair to say that most people have had varying tastes in music, throughout the course of their lives and certainly I’m no different. There are bands that I started to listen to out of my own curiosity, through the social circles I was in, because purely by chance a heard a track or saw a video. Most of these I followed up and I either retained my interest or I didn’t.

It’s only now that I realise what a, well I won’t say stupid mistake, but a mistake nonetheless. I knew of Pearl Jam, I knew four or five or their songs and, as a result, looked over their back catalog but that was as far as I got.

Now, as I bask in the unwelcome glow of hindsight, I can’t believe what I’ve missed. It took me until ‘Pearl Jam’ was released before I took the plunge and now it seems too little, too late. I don’t have a reasoning to explain why I didn’t act sooner, it just happened.

I was pouring over videos on youtube last night and sank deeper into remorse with each one. All the excitement about album releases gone, all those jaw-dropping-head-fucking performances all gone.

It almost feels like a burden round my neck, as stupid as that sounds. Don’t get me wrong, there are more important things in my life but music plays a fundamental part in it and, of all the bands that I’ve got into, Pearl Jam have had a huge effect on me, more so due to Eddie Vedder’s uniqueness. You don’t need an example, but here’s one anyway –

A voice you’d kill for and an utterly absorbing stage persona. That is Eddie.

All that’s left is that there is enough time and enough Pearl Jam ahead to reconcile my mistake. I apologise if this seems a dumb post, but thought I’d share my thoughts with you all.
It's gonna be a glorious day...

  • Not a dumb post at all. Just don't beat yourself up about it too much.... they're still around making amazing music and putting on the best live show that can be found. I went through a similar hiatus between Yield and Riot Act. Felt bad for a while, but then realized there was nothing I could do about it except enjoy the new music.

P.S. Eddie looks really funny in that "suit" in the youtube video.

That really would be one of the best experiences to have back again. It would be like going back to childhood. Except unlike other things that I'd like to do over, this one would be out of pure enjoyment, no sense of trying to make up for something that could have better. To the OP, enjoy it. The ride is amazing the first time you take it, even if it's a bit delayed.

    Thanks for that! :D

Yeah, there's it that side to it. The songs still excite me (I still get a buzz from Alive!!) and the more I get immersed in the whole thing the more meaning they take on. Also tracking the band's history in terms of live performances is very enjoyable, each and every one of them being fantastic, but just a little different to one another.

As long as I get to see them play live about another 30 times I'll be happy!
