read this Neil Young quote:

"I'll tell you what: If all I had was Pearl Jam, and I didn't have another band in the world, I would not be worried. Because in there is the essence of making great music. You don't have to use it all at once, but it's there." - Neil Young

  • I like some of Neil's songs, but I don't much care for him as a whole. Nor do I like The Who. I absolutely love PJ and Ed's stuff, but some of his/their biggest influences do nothing for me. I think it's fantastic that Pearl Jam had turned on a whole new generation basically single-handedly to these artists, but they don't do much for me. I went to see CSNY and The Who when they came here to check them out (both with my Dad), but I was largley unimpressed with both.

Curiously, I love when other bands COVER those artist's songs (except Love Reign O'er Me-I don't like that at all). Raine Maida's rendition of NATDD is awesome.

    Maybe it's Neil's voice I don't care for, I don't know. Somethin' tho.

And The Who......I don't know. I'm just not buyin' it. Too theatrical. Not a whole lotta meat and potatoes. I went and saw Tommy (the musical), and it was awesome, but other than that.....meh.

    Neil rocks!

Lost his way a bit in recent albums, (in my opinion,) as I want more raw sounding stuff coming out from him and less introspective.

Totally agree i love some of Neil Young's stuff, especially him live & Mirrorball, of course. As for The Who i was never into them at all & why do they keep playing with half the original line up now deceased, to me that is a insult to them. There are times when you should just finish it & bow out gracefully.

    its an absolute masterpiece.
so someone told me the other day.
I said it wasnt. But my opinion got that thread locked.

but its a very good album, but i prefer the first 5 albums as well.. actually i dont if i'm allowed to even say that? :?

it's no an insult at all. it's to honor the ox and moony and keep the legacy of those 2 alive. zak starky does a damn good job at who songs. even better than matt cam does. pete can still play better than alota guitarist can.

can we please stop with the uncle neil young bull shit. he isn't anyones uncle on here.

  • i love The Who's music, especially when Ed Vedder is singing it.

Neil Young is a legend - I absolutely love him but I can see why people may not dig the voice. I happen to think that's what makes him unique, and therefore great.

i think this may be a generational thing, but it's difficult to understand how somebody can like a band like Pearl Jam so much, yet not like the two main influences on their music. without the Who and Neil Young, there likely would be no Pearl Jam.

    isn't that funny?
i was saying the exact same thing here the other day in another thread. whenever the guys discuss musical influences/loves....i'd say at least 90% of em, i don't care for really at all....and the other 5% i may like, but still not musical loves, or perhaps just a few tunes. i find it extrmemely interesting that i can love a band's music so much, and yet what apparently influences them most.....meh.

and i will also add, i LOVE pearl jam covering the who....way, way, way more than i ever really liked the who. :D

    as to this:

it';s interesting, but certainly not 'difficult'....pearl jam really sound nothing like neil young or the who. everyone is 'influenced' by who/what came before....doesn't mean we're all going to like it too. and as to a 'generational thing'...i am 40......and still not a neil young fan. most of my friends are not neil young fans. i respect his contribution, i love a lot of his lyrics....and yet, still not a fan of him. also not a fan of the ramones. enjoy a few tunes for the fun/nostalgia of em, but i have never bought a ramones album and probably never will. there is plenty of music out there, lots of influences. btw - without elvis there probably wouldn't be a lot of music either.....and i am no fan of his either. :P just because what came before perhaps needed to be come before, again, doesn't mean you have to like it. at most, i appreciate/aknowledge said artists anfd musicians for their contributions to rock music history....
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow
