How did you all like the Backspacer backdrop?

As I have only seen them 3 times, San Fran III and Seattle I and II, I may be out of the loop, but it seemed to me the fact that they had that backdrop of typewriter keys, and in one place they spelled out Pearl Jam. They also, during the encore, had a backdrop that was a circle with a PJ in the middle.

Is this new? Have they ever done this before? Obviously they didnt have the backspacer stuff up before, but have they generally had their name on the backdrop in the past?

  • in europe, with the wave background from last tour(s)....they also had side banners with the pearl jam crossboards logo on it. they were beautiful. i LOVEd the whole wave backdrop. obviously, the typewriter keys work for this album, tho i don't think as "beautiful"....works for the tour, and given that it so clearly typeset/keys...just makes sense to have it spell out 'pearl jam.' haven't seen it in person yet, await philly for that - but checked out someone's posted pics to see it earlier. and before the wave backdrop, don't think i've ever seen pj with a backdrop....at least since my first show in 2003. so backdrops in general i think are relatively new for the band.

Love the new backdrops and how they light up the letters at the start of the show

  • I love it, I even made a thread about it in GTF.

I wonder how they light up though. I thought they were actual huge physical "keys" but it looks like its really just a giant cloth banner.

  • I'm a fan of no backdrop. The seats right behind the stage can be killer.

yeah the backdrop complete with their name is brand new for them. at least I've never seen it in pix, or myself live (seen them in 91 98 00 06 08). like the other posters said they've been rocking the Japanese wave backdrop in between albums. but to have one that has their name? never thought I'd see it. kinda cool. they're actually acting like rock stars! ha, ha.

as a sidenote: I don't think their stage setup gets cooler than the 98 one. with those five huge burning candle stands as the backdrop. this:

my question for you guys: what was the lights like? usual stuff? anything unusual?

I seem to remember a planet back drop / sculpture for binaural... at least for a show or two. But 98 is best, but I think I am just partial.

As a side note, I thought Ed's back drop was a bit distracting at the Ryman. It was pretty simple, maybe I am just not used to props/backdrops.

Mr. Pickles is a Charlie McCarthy dummy that the band has on stage at their shows. He’s been in various positions for various occasions (holding an American flag the day after the 4th of July, etc.). On the second Seattle show of 98 (7/22/98), he was lowered on a string in front of Mike, who then proceeded to beat the crap out of him with his guitar! Ed even joined the fun, beating him with his mic stand! Poor Mr. Pickles… (this is commonly known as "The Mr. Pickles incident")
