I love the record but i definitely think it tries to be more commercial then their last three (or five, depending on how you look at it) records... tho it makes no sense to me cause avocado was as ten-sounding as they've been since vs.
Their top 3 songs on itunes are:
1. The fixer
2. the fixer
3. just breathe
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
Butthead: Huh huh.
i'm impressed with the fact that they are not signed to a major label and are able to score the (potentially) #1 record in the country. don't get me wrong, i fully support (every chance i can) indie record labels but they seldom have "major" selling records. tip of the hat to PJ.
well said. MAJOR TIP OF THE HAT TO PJ FOR THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT.
they are always blazing a new trail.
I wonder if they will be the first band to accomplish that feat? There had to be atleast one non-major label act to hit #1 no?
But I guess it doesnt really count anyway, because they are using a major label over-seas.
"Smash" by The Offspring only peaked at #4, but it sold over 6 million copies in the U.S. and 16 million worldwide for Epitaph Records. I believe it is still the biggest-selling indie record of all time.
they deserve it obviously, but I am having a hard time figuring out how this is possible. yes they are a major rock band, a legendary major act, but face it, in many ways this is a cult band. They are a big deal to us, but beyond us, I dont think there is much. Thats due to alot of stuff. The majority of people either moved on to other genres of music post Kurts death, or they forgot PJ existed when the band retreated from the mainstream in the mid to late 90's.
So I am having a hard time figuring out, how such a band could have the number one album of the week, their first in 13 years.
Has The Fixer, and Got Some really done all that well?
In some ways, it does make sense, This is the most mainstream and accessible Pearl jam record since Ten. Politics that could divide fans are absent. The songs arent really about complex or abstract ideas. Its really an album about love, and finding a place in the world.
But on the other hand, I find it hard to believe those fans who moved on, or forgot about PJ, would suddenly come back into the fold. I dont think that happens.
Beyond us, the rabid hardcores, and the folks who have been with the band since day 1, who is their audience now? It sure as hell aint teenyboppers, Top 40 fans or even really mainstream rock fans.
...
My guess... there wasn't a Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus record released on the same week.
Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!
Hail, Hail!!!
All albums stocked at Target count as SOLD albums. That is why bands are teaming up with these big box stores. A big marketing push from these stores creates large displays that are filled with albums. AC/DC had 2 million albums sold before their last record was released because of their Wal Mart deal. Simple math when you view it that way.
I only know what I read on this board, but it seems as if Just Breathe has or had a pretty good run on the itunes singles chart.
I would guess that must be word of mouth.
It also seems as if they are pushing this album less than S/T was pushed. The band was doing a lot of promotion and interviews I thought at the time.
This time it seems pretty quiet. (All of this is from memory and current perception, so I could be wrong)

i think you are dead on here. all this talk of "selling out" is nonsense. i think there was more a push in terms of tv appearances and the like for avocado than this for sure. i would like to think they do letterman when they come over to the east coast...but that's 6 weeks after the album was released.
not sure i understand the marketing strategy here.

Not in terms of SoundScan sales. Records shipped count toward RIAA certifications, but only actual sales to consumers are counted by SoundScan in the data that goes into the Billboard chart.

Offspring should'nt be able to sell 6 copies.
Smash was really good, before i knew they would just rehash it 27 times on future albums.
