One of their better love songs. I think it really incorporates a purer energy of love.

This is a great song. I know I have said it before but this whole album is an indication that this band is in a really good place right now, especially Eddie. He seems to have exorcised his demons and has a fairly positive energy right now.
  • Completely agree! A wonderfully uplifting, positive love song :D
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Is it any different from the album version? I'm holding off getting any bootlegs till my show in Perth!
  • A few days after LA3, Roy and I went into his Hollywood studio and I video taped him taking a journey on Amongst The Waves. No rehearsals, pure improvisation.

Respect to Stone who composed such an beautiful melody. And to Eddie for the lyrics. One of the greatest songs in Backspacer.

    Check it out -- http://bit.ly/Amongst
  • I would have to agree with everyone. I love the entire album but this is one of the first songs that hit me. (also "Unthought Known" and "Force of Nature")
  • Pearl Jam at their best. The space in the chorus and the change make this brilliant. The power is in the rhythm guitar and organ. Great guitar solo. Reminds me why I fell in love with this band. Cannot say enough. Wonderfully affirmative and anthemic!
  • Absolutely one of my favourite Pearl Jam songs ever. The first time I heard it, I was captured  . I can't wait to hear it live - 13 days til the Philly shows begin!

Anyone know what this song is about? Eddie stated that a lot of people are saying it's about surfing, but it's not, he cleared that up.... so any suggestions?
  • In San Diego Ed said you'll get the song if you are in love. And you'll get it if you are a surfer. And if you are a surfer in love then it'll blow your fuckin' mind.
    Or something along those lines.

Either way, fantastic song. If you haven't heard it live yet, you will be amazed.

I heard the live version from the LA#1 boot. Eddie fucked up the 2nd verse, but it's really good overall. If only they could increase the volume of the bass. The mix is really bad.
  • At LA2 Eddie said it was about riding the waves of a relationship (paraphrasing here, but that's the message.) I also felt it was the first song off Backspacer which really struck me.

My fave off Backspacer. But all the songs are great. Jonny Guitar is my least fave. but I'm starting to like it better.
  • Amongst the Waves is my new favorite song. It sounds even more amazing on Vinyl for those who have it. This song was probably inside Eddie for a long long time and he finally brought it out on a song. One of my favorites off Backspacer.

i thought this would be my favorite from the 15 second clips we were hearing..
but it wasn't. loved the other songs so much more.
no this song has hit me. i love it
  • Actually, what's funny, going on on what I said. I listened to the song, but I never really captured it until I heard it live. It's so awesome live. After I heard it live, I love hearing the song on the album.

I kinda think that this song might have been "High Above the Clouds" to start - the way the chorus starts sort of reminds me of the thrill you feel when the plane just becomes airborne...but then it also reminds me of the little butterflies I feel when my hubby picks me up after work - just that one part of the song....

However, my husband thinks the song sounds gay and he doesn't like it.... :o

Totally agree justam!! :D It's just purely positive Pearl Jam!!! HOW AMAZING IS THAT?!?!?! Not the beautiful sad love song we're use to....just a straight up beautiful positive one that completely celebrates the fuzzy, uplifting, inspiring feeling of being in love!! YAY!!! FINALLY!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!

The DREAM TEAM (Ed & Stone) never fail when it comes to writing super catchy songs that just dig into your soul! I also agree with others that the feeling this song captures transcends beyond belief in a live setting!! WOW!!!!!! :D *feels all warm & fuzzy* The crowd participation is frickin gorgeous!! When that monstrous chorus comes crashing in...... everyone with their hands upraised.....riding high!!! Ahhhhh!!! SOOOOO BEAUTIFUL!!!!

"if not for love I would be drowning"

    Amen! It's perfect!!!

This really is Pearl Jam at their best!!! Makes me SO happy to hear/feel them SO happy!!! ((( :) ))) Talk about contagious!!!
