Yes, they did. Tool, not Godsmack.
Riot Act was obviously in 2002.
Great fact-finding by RS!
200,000 is a lot if they are only counting Target, iTunes and indie stores. Not so much if you factor in 10C sales I would bet.

How many artists score a #1 this late into their careers after having been so popular early in the careers?

Excited to see what alice in chains can do...
album sales as a way to judge a band's success is so 1995.
ahh. is that the case in the US? those were all released this week?
Self-Titled: 278,000
Binaural: 226,000
Backspacer: 175-200,000 (25-28,500 per day)
Riot Act: 166,000 (33,200 per day)
This was also the case for the Ten Release a couple of months ago.
Well, in Canada it only debuted at #14 but that is because only Sunday's sales were calculated:
"CHART NOTE: Pearl Jam's "Backspacer" debuted at No. 14 in Canada, but keep in mind that it was released (strangely) on Sunday, giving it only one day of tabulations."
Saying that, is the 175-200k sales estimated in the US and if not, what was the sales period? I would say that the second week of sales would be a better account of how many copies were sold.
Good question...I'm confused on how the sales were calculated or if they were estimated based on Sunday's sales. And if you click on the Billboard top 100 albums chart, Backspacer doesn't appear. Maybe they are describing next week's chart out on Wednesday?
Here in Canada, appearing at #14 is very strong because it was based on Sunday's sales alone. It would have easily been #1 if it was released on a Tuesday.
So 200k is really impressive not counting the first day the record went on sale!
But why isn't Backspacer on the charts for last week then?
I'm interested as well...this is confusing.
