Great news!...however, who the hell is doing research for Rolling Stone and does anybody really think Godsmack would have beaten Pearl Jam out of the top spot in '06? If that had happened I might have stopped listening to them. And I didn't realize they worked so hard in '06 releasing TWO albums that year, amazing!

Not that it would matter to me personally whether it's going to be #1 or #276, but good news nonetheless!

Yes, they did. Tool, not Godsmack.

Riot Act was obviously in 2002.

    Great fact-finding by RS!

I've seen this question a bunch but not a definitive answer. Do the 10C sales count toward Billboard's totals or not?

200,000 is a lot if they are only counting Target, iTunes and indie stores. Not so much if you factor in 10C sales I would bet.

This also leads me to another question.

How many artists score a #1 this late into their careers after having been so popular early in the careers?

  • honestly, it's great that they are selling well, but let's be honest. pretty weak competition this week. Muse is the only thing giving them a run for their money.

album sales as a way to judge a band's success is so 1995. ;)

Madonna, Muse and KOL are the competition in EU.

  • debuting at number one is great and all, but why are the numbers so low? according to their numbers, Backspacer will sell far less in its first week than Avocado did.

ahh. is that the case in the US? those were all released this week?
  • do we know for sure if the 10c sales are included in the numbers? i've read posts claiming both yes and no. does anybody know the truth? all i want is the truth, please give me some truth. :0

Well, it's not that much more than Riot Act, and it was out for 2 extra days. Being limited to Target surely hurt some though, so we'll see how it sells going forward.

    Self-Titled: 278,000
    Binaural: 226,000
    Backspacer: 175-200,000 (25-28,500 per day)
Riot Act: 166,000 (33,200 per day)

  • 10-Club sales will be included in the final Soundscan numbers.
This was also the case for the Ten Release a couple of months ago.

Oh wait, the sales week is Monday through Sunday, so will this not count first day sales? If not, this might be more impressive.

Well, in Canada it only debuted at #14 but that is because only Sunday's sales were calculated:

"CHART NOTE: Pearl Jam's "Backspacer" debuted at No. 14 in Canada, but keep in mind that it was released (strangely) on Sunday, giving it only one day of tabulations."

Saying that, is the 175-200k sales estimated in the US and if not, what was the sales period? I would say that the second week of sales would be a better account of how many copies were sold.

Didn't Vs get disqualified from the charts because it came with a poster (or was it a single from the album) - seem to remember something like that happening but I have smoked a shedload of weed since then...

  • I thought the sales week started on tuesday, which is why artist always release on that day. So that mean they would have sales from just 2 days, right?

Good question...I'm confused on how the sales were calculated or if they were estimated based on Sunday's sales. And if you click on the Billboard top 100 albums chart, Backspacer doesn't appear. Maybe they are describing next week's chart out on Wednesday?

Here in Canada, appearing at #14 is very strong because it was based on Sunday's sales alone. It would have easily been #1 if it was released on a Tuesday.
  • When I look at the canadian charts, it is listed at #16.

1st week sales will NOT include Sunday or Monday. It will only include Tuesday on....

So 200k is really impressive not counting the first day the record went on sale!

But why isn't Backspacer on the charts for last week then?
