Agree with both points. But what do I know, I really liked S/T.
Agree and agree.
And I like it a lot more than No Code. I have never been a No Code guy. I don't like the spoken word stuff he does, or Mankind, or Habit. And I am bored of Hail, Hail. It has some of the greatest songs this band has ever recorded (Present Tense, In My Tree) but as a whole I am not a big fan.
From Binaural to Backspacer they're good/really good but not as great as the others. With Backspacer being the best of the four.
So yeah, I would say the best album since Yield.
BTW, I think Binaural is the worst of the lot (still a good album...!). Now feel free to insult me

Here I am.
i would say that Backsapcer is like Finchers Panic Room, a great and tight movie that doesn't try to be more than it is. Riot Act is Zodiac, a bit harder to get into maybe but a masterpiece.
Or Bergmans Wild Strawberries (Backsapcer) to Persona (Riot Act).
Or Tarantinos Kill Bill (Backsapcer) to Inglourious Besterds (Riot Act)
or Neil Youngs Everybody's Rockin' (Backspacer) to Neil Young S/T (Riot Act)
or NIN's Pretty Hate Machine (Backspacer) to The Fragile (Riot Act)
or Kate Moss (Backspacer) to Jennifer Connely (Riot Act)
"Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"
Judging by my own response to the songs, I'd say that Backspacer is definitely their weakest effort. Seems they took the parts I wasn't thrilled about on the previous release and ran with it.
The result is that I think it sounds bland, mostly. Critics rave, sales soar, but they have stopped sounding interesting to me. (Although listening to Supersonic right now ups my opinion of that one slightly) The biggest disappointment is that there's not a single song that makes me stop and take notice so far. As for their more ballady songs, they have gone downhill on the last 2 albums. A slight improvement on the rockers though.
I dunno, I was kinda jazzed about the folksy direction they were headed on Riot Act, and I'm a bit disappointed that they have instead opted for a more pop punk approach. The slow numbers suffering badly in the process.
I dont hate it, I almost wish I did. It's just very even and only mildly interesting. It breaks my heart as a 15 years diehard fan, that I dont really feel anything about the songs. I'd rather they'd tried a twist with the music and challenged themselves and me, and fall completely on their faces, rather than make a bland album.
I'm gonna give it some more spins before I discard it completely, but I'm doing so more out of a sense of duty rather than anticipation. As I said, I dont hate it, and it's not bad. It's just not that good either.
(be gentle with me)
Peace
Dan

Let me settle this silly argument once and for all, as I am wise beyond me years...
Backspacer is WITHOUT QUESTION, UNDENIABLY, and WITHOUT A DOUBT Pearl Jam's best album since........
Their last one!...;)

HAHAHAHAHA Word.
I'm still not sure if I like it better than Binaural though. This is definitely the best first impression I've gotten from an album since Yield though.

Nah, I'll go with Yield...for now.
Ten through Yield are the best of the lot.

Virgil's got my back...if need be. Although lately I've felt like dumping his ass for Bobby "The Brain" Heenan...we'll see.
google "i was still here, but not anymore"
says it is a backspacer b-side. all these links, but i haven't been able to actually download it. but i'm also apprehensive about random torrents
