Why I love Backspacer (fast and slow)

Since Binaural, the two biggest things I have not been as big a fan of, are the slow songs, and the fast punky songs. Thumbing my Way and Parachutes were both songs I wanted to like more than I ever have. Never been a fan of Save You; Comatose doesn't really do it for me.

As far as the slow songs, I think these songs are right up there with the classics I loved from the past. Nothingman, Off He Goes, Low Light, etc. And that excites me, because I was starting to worry they could no longer write good slow songs.

As for the punk songs, they have never necessarily been my thing. I mean, I love Brain of J and Last Exit, but as I said, latley, songs like Save You and Comatose, I didn't get too excited about. But I have found myself falling more and more in love with Gonna See My Friends, Got Some and Supsersonic.

So the two things I thought had been kind of lacking latley, are back and as good as they ever were.

And that is why I love Backspacer.

(And I didn't even mention the middle of the road songs like Amongst the Waves & Unthought Known, which are probably my two favorite songs on the album!)

  • i've been a fan of most of their rockers lately, and this is more awesomeness. I agree about the slow ones. these are the best in a long while.

I'm kind of over the mid tempo ones. just personal preference, but with the exception of Unthought Known and 1/2 Full, i'm not too high on them anymore.

I like the rockers on this album better than any since Yield (if that's album can even be considered as having rockers).
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
  • Supersonic is quite badass, once you give it a few listens. Very crunchy Stone song.

Still my least favorite ... which is kind of like picking a least favorite supermodel to bang. But still.

The rocker that has grown on me most since first listen is Gonna See My Friend.
Or, if you count Force of Nature as a rocker, maybe that one.

Yeah, see, I wasn't feeling it as much at first. Or Gonna See My Friend. But now I go straight to those songs when I'm ready to rock out. Fortunately The Fixer is probably my least favorite, which is awesome because I actually do like it, so when the first song you hear ends up being you least favorite, it allows for lots of pleasure in the other songs. Nobody wants to hear the best song first, then it's all downhill!

Force of Nature is sublime. Is it a rocker? Hmmm ... Its a Yield-style rocker, if that makes sense.

Gonna See My Friend is a great hybrid of blues, punk, and Superunknown-era Soundgarden. Kinda hard to beat that, but yes ... The first time I listened, I had a "meh" reaction.

Honest to God, what connected me with GSMF is that I turned the volume on my stereo waaaaay up. Like louder than its ever been before.

That's when I realized: This is fucking great.

What about "All Or None" for a slow number? I think it's a helluva tune.

I will agree that is one of the better ones to come out since 1998. I think it would be better if Ed really would have belted it out or something.
