Has anyone read the review for Backspacer in the newest issue of Rolling Stone? In it the writer states that Pearl Jam is a ballad band and songs like "Spin the Black Circle" were just fillers for us to get to the next "Daughter" or "Black". He then goes on to state that "Just Breathe" is Pearl Jam's wedding song. I personally don't agree with any of it. But I guess to someone who isn't an avid listener that they could gather that. What do you guys think?

My little brother is actually the one who gets it. I call Rolling Stone my "period". Mainly because it comes once a month, it always manages to piss me off, but I can't stop reading it.
  • Spin the Black Circle is one hell of a grammy-winning kick ass filler.
  • Yes it is. Yes it is.
  • Most reviews I read of new Pearl Jam albums, even when they are complimentary STILL manage to shit on the band ala Rolling Stone's review. Tired of reading reviews from people who's only goal is try to make themselves sound cool by shitting on a great band's latest artistic endeavor. Not sure why I keep reading reviews...
Oh, if I knew where it was, I would take you there, but there's much more than this.
Ooooh. Whoooa, much more than this. Woooh see the world. Much more than... Oooh, much more than.. Why?

Because unfortunately we always want to know what other people think. And we all want to see the album get high reviews. I think it's a sign of recognition that we like something good.

Rolling Stone is a guilty pleasure. I think you guys are really over-analyzing what is essentially a very positive review of the album.

And it comes more than once a month: So you'll need to call it something else.
My Pearl Jam Road: 10/22/90 Seattle | 12/22/90 Seattle, Moore Theater | 9/29/92 Seattle, Magnusson Park, Drop in the Park | 9/5/93 The Gorge, with Neil Young and Blind Melon | 7/20/06 Portland, Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall with Sleater-Kinney | 7/22/06 The Gorge, 10/21/06 Mountain View, Shoreline Ampitheatre, Bridge School Benefit | 9/21/09 Seattle | 9/22/09 Seattle | 9/26/09 Portland, OR | 7/14/2011 Eddie Vedder, Portland, OR | 11/29/13 Portland, OR

It_Wasnt_My_Surface, yeah that's true, I do wanna know what others think, just can't stop myself I guess

I do over analyze everything for sure Joe :p

  • That's so f-ing funny, since most of the fans I know are OK with the ballads, but strongly prefer the hard rockers like STBC, etc.

I would say they write the ballads as fillers until the next Lukin, DTE, or Blood come along.
  • FYI, Sheffield also wrote RollingStone's Yield review. Similar tone really, but all in all, he is positive towards both.
