Magical music, very relaxing and just transports you somewhere else.

  • I agree. Def one of my favs from the album. I kinda feel bad for saying this but I think I prefer the Demo version rather than the album version (dont get me wrong both are amazing).

I noticed they havent played this yet...hopefully they're saving it for Philly :D

Not heard the demo version, but the album one initially reminded me of something off the Smashing Pumpkins record 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness'. Its now taken on its own identity and is one of my favs on the album. The 'clicks' (what instrument is that?) is pretty surprising imo!

Yes! What is that noise that keeps zipping through SoS? Sounds like a quick little blast of feedback. Or they have set their phasers to stun.

  • i fucking HATE the album version of speed of sound, only because i loved the demo version soooooo much. i was so upset about the album version. skip it every time.
In July 2007 Densmore said that he would not rejoin The Doors unless it was fronted by Eddie Vedder. Densmore says, "I play with Jim. If there's someone of that level, OK. I'm not gonna join them with Ian. That's not to diss Ian, he's a good singer - but he's no Jim Morrison. Eddie Vedder? My God, there's a singer."

Anybody got a linky to the demo? Or should I stay away as I love SoS album version?

  • When this just feels like spinning plates.

The demo version was same old, same old. Guy with guitar singing. The album version is great.
we're all going to the same place...
  • Yeah, this is the only song on the album that I have skipped. The demo version really was nice, and the drums just kill this one for me. Other than the drums I really like the added instrumentation. I didn't at first, but at least that part has grown on me. I think the drums just make Ed's singing rhythm entirely too choppy... something just sounds awkward on the album version.

  • Brilliant drumming by Matt and the bridges with Mike's guitar work are amazing, he really nailed it. Mike is one of the best at emoting with his guitar. It must be nice for Ed to be able to take a demo to his band and have these pros turn into something more.
  • I'm kind of glad I never bothered to listen to the demo version. Might have ruined what has become one of my favorite Backspacer songs.

Or replaced with your new favorite song of all time?

  • They did a nice job with the studio version ... Someone in another thread referred to Matt's drums as 80's cock rock or something, which I don't hear at all. In all honestly, the full-band version sounds a bit theatrical, but this is not really a bad thing. Something new for PJ fans to chew on. The demo sounds like just another song strummed by Ed on an acoustic guitar.

The demo is the songs skeleton, the wooden stage before all the props and backdrops have been added.

  • Sounds like Bruce Hornsby to me......
