MILWAUKEE- Dr. Michael Richter of Glendale lost his life on Saturday after being struck by a car while walking his dog. He was a well known doctor working at a clinic in Milwaukee. But his work didn't stop there. He somehow made time to coach basketball at two schools. On Monday, the Rufus King basketball team met without assistant coach Richter for the first time. It seemed like business as usual at a basketball team meeting on Monday after school. But the absence of assistant coach Michael Richter was felt by everyone there. "Coach Richter was a role model for the team. Not just a coach, but a good person," said student and basketball team member Michael Ward. Michael Richter had a medical practice, but he made time to serve as assistant coach at Rufus King. He also coached 7th and 8th grade girls' basketball at St. Monica's in Whitefish Bay, where his two daughters go to school. On Monday, students at St. Monica's prayed for Dr. Richter and his family. Players at Rufus King knew Coach Richter as "Doc". "When we used to be in the games, I used to always pick Coach Richter's voice out of all the coaches. He would be like, "That a boy, Mike!" and that's what I'm always going to keep with me to encourage me to move forward," said Michael Ward. Now, that voice won't be there for the team anymore. "It's a hard loss, but we just gotta stay strong and maybe next year try to win the state title for him," said student Justin Newell. The coaching staff at Rufus King told TODAY'S TMJ4 one of their favorite stories about Coach Richter. One time, a member of the opponent's team collapsed on the court. They were about to use a defibrillator on him, thinking it was heart failure. Dr. Richter stepped in and recognized right away it was a seizure. He treated the student for 3 quarters of the game until he was all right. The staff says just that's the kind of person Michael Richter was.
