Self Titled on purpose

So I noticed yesterday that when I popped the CD in my PC, my WMP recognized it as self titled and overwrote the folder.

I thought it must be a glitch with windows cause I am a PC hater.

Then I saw @twofeetthick ? talkin about it too.

Got to wondering if it was done on purpose - I know it is cheezy but the title is backspacer and the last album was 2006's self titled (avocado)

Just throwin that out there.

Digging the album, digging the two free downloads and will probably buy another copy just to get the other two shows I wanted.

Best work ever? nah - but it is PJ and I love em and as I read on the forum - this is proof that they are still evolving and very relevant.

The haters are just lame asses who think its cool to be snobby.

Understand this Ten, Vs. Vitalogy were albums that definied a generation. It will be hard for any band to recapture that kind of magic. Be happy with the fact that the band that defined a certain time in your life is still making good music, still playing epic live shows, and still looking out for you the fan. Who knows how long they will keep this up for?

I read a great article today comparing PJ's impact on the music scene as a whole to the Grateful Dead. The comparisons are striking.

To think that we, as fans, could be so lucky to have something similar...

I actually think it's snobby to call devoted Pearl Jam fans haters just because they don't like the new album. You're dismissing an entire opinion just because you don't agree with it, that's snobby.

My main problem with the album it sounds like ITW and Avocado left overs, am I a hater because I didn't want Pearl Jam to release an album they already made?

Most of it is better than much of Avocado. In many ways, Avocado was just practice for Backspacer.

That doesn't matter, the fact that they made an album that sounds like the last one is depressing, especially considering that the last album was supposed to sound like older albums. I didn't want Pearl Jam to become a parody of themselves, I didn't want to see them become Aerosmith or AC/DC, and if they keep making music that's supposed to sound like albums they've already released, then that will happen.

To be perfectly honest, I don't really know what you're talking about. This album doesn't really sound much like Avocado at all. The only two songs I could really envision being on Avocado are Johnny Guitar and maybe Supersonic.

In fact, the biggest complaint about Backspacer I've heard it that it "doesn't sound like Pearl Jam."

So I don't know what to tell you. Sorry you don't like it. But if the reason you don't like is because you think it sounds like the last one ... I think you're being a little foolish.

Practice for backspacer. you're fucking rediculous
  • I personally don't see any of the old albums in this one. I see a bit of ITW, but I'm guessing that's just because that was the frame of mind that EV was in when he wrote those tunes.

I see this to be more punk than anything they've ever done. I couldn't stand The Fixer, but when I saw them on Conan do Got Some, I flipped out. And the rest of the record, ironically save for the slower ITW ones, is awesome. I love ITW, but I don't like The End or Just Breathe or the band version of SOS that much. I know I'm in the minority on those ones, but I much prefer the upbeat ones on this record.

It seems to me that what you are doing is quite precisely defined as "hating" on the new album.

I am merely stating that as a fan, I am just glad they are making music and am grateful to be seeing them on 10/31.

I paid plenty of cash over the years to buy shitty bootlegs recorded with crappy equipment and would be happy someone was able to tape the show and listen to those shitty boots for years.

Just happy for some new tunes.

  • Backspacer has given me new appreciation for Avocado. Tracks like WWS, Severed Hand and Comatose seem leaner and meaner when compared to the some of the Backspacer rockers.

Yes, I'm criticizing the new album

But you said "The haters are just lame asses who think its cool to be snobby. " and to me that came off as snobby to dismiss people as "lame asses" just because they didn't like an album you liked, that's elitist bullshit. I don't like Backspacer, does that mean I hate Pearl Jam and that I'm a "lame ass"? Because according to you that would be correct.

Severed Hand I'm still excited about. WWS and Comatose ... I've kinda been there, done that with. I think we've taken them as far as they can go.

Well I don't lose or gain excitement for songs as years pass. Once a good tune always a good tune to me (for the most part). My preferred PJ style is fast, loud rockers a la Severed Hand, Spin the Black Circle, Hail Hail, Grievance, etc. I really like Got Some and at least the effort is there on Supersonic. But for my tastes, Pearl Jam doesn't really make good mid-tempo songs anymore. They used to be great at it (songs like In Hiding, Dissident, Red Mosquito, I Am Mine, etc) but I just can't get into their newer mid-temp stuff (Unemployable, Unthought Known, Force of Nature).

I think if you really think about it, you'll realize this isn't true. We all get over songs, or go through phases at least.

If I don't hear Comatose or WWS on this tour, I'm not going to be disappointed. There's stuff on the newer record I'd rather hear instead. I instantaneously like Got Some better than either of those songs ... and probably "Friend," too.

Spin the Black Circle is another one it wouldn't kill me to not hear for a while. I mean, I'm not going to be pissed if they play it. But I could probably think of 50 originals I'd rather hear in its place.

Not songs that REALLY matter to you. I'll never be over Do the Evolution. If I hear it ten billion times I'll never be over it. But I know what you mean: when you first hear a new song you may be into it for a year or so but it goes away. But you know that the songs that really mean something to you end up ingrained into your DNA. Strawberry Fields Forever isn't just a song I like, it's literally about .00012% of who I am.

You know what, I get what you're saying. Most of the songs I'm mentioning are songs that I probably could have always given or taken.

Wishlist, Sleight of Hand, Off He Goes, Small Town, Black, Present Tense, In Hiding, Faithfull ... those songs are important to me. And I'll never be over them.

    So, yeah, I get it.

EDIT: Jeez. That's three Yield songs while just off-handedly mentioning some of my all-time favorites. And if I'm being perfectly honest, DTE is up there, too. And possibly GTF. What a great f'n album.

yeah, this one kinda succeeds better than the other one IMO.
