Demo Speed Of Sound better than album Speed Of Sound

I think less = more with this song. The bonus EdVed demo version we got a few months back just sounds better than the full instrumental version on the album. It just seems that there are too many notes played as Ed sings, especially in the first verse, you can hear that extra note being out of place.

  • I thought the same for my first week with this album, but I now think the album version is much better..

They messsed with our heads by releasing the demo.. give the album version a few weeks and a few dozen listens and I think most will change their minds. The demo bores me now.. 8-)

There have been tons of posts debating this issue, and I think the right version made the album (is probably one of my favorites as well). The demo is just too thin for me. Everyone else is slamming the drum work, but I think its a great touch.

That being said I do enjoy the demo as a side dish.

Exactly........the guitar work is nice and subtle on the demo, but the album version provides the extra bulk to help maintain the melody.

To me it really is a different song now.. when I hear the demo I can't help but think where are the drums.. I really liked the demo, but it grew old quick. The album version gave it new life. Its got more bounce and spirit now.
  • I didn't really like the demo. I always got lost in it.

As soon as I heard the album version I loved it. Its about my 4th fav from BS. wheras a lot of people have it ranked quite low.

i listened to the demo when it first surfaced and thought i was a good song but i knew the band would do great things with it and they did...which is why it was a demo
  • I'm just glad i have two versions of this amazing song.

  • i prefer the demo version, but the studio is growing on me...i just think the drums in that song are too over powering...nothing against matt, just wish they were a bit quieter

I compare Speed to Gone from 3 yrs ago, in that it was an Ed demo first. But I thought the Gone demo is far superior to the album version, while the Speed album is better than the demo, and I really liked the demo.

  • Both versions are great. I like the demo a little better though.
  • I like the album version with the piano way better..................
  • i wasn;t crazy about either. i really dont like overproduced adult contemporary PJ. it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. i wouldn;t listen to any other band with a song like SPeed of Sound. its dreck. luckily the rest is good.

    its a good word.
  • I respectfully disagree ... Not a fan of stripped down demos, as a general rule.
  • I don't care for the album version either. The first time I heard it I thought it sounded like it belonged in a musical or theatre production. It just has an element of cheesiness to it. I think it might benefit from less piano. That being said, it has grown on me a tiny bit since I first heard it, but still don't prefer it.

exactly, it sounds very musical-ish. very strange. an interesting attempt i guess, but i dont care for it.
  • The drums have such an 80's power ballad feel to it and that's why i don't like the pj version. My daughter even hates it and she loves the demo version. It's almost like they recorded it that way so that it wouldn't feel as if half the album was an Ed solo effort, which it is. All the songs that have only Ed getting credit for the music and lyrics would have fit woderfully on "Into the Wild",except for"gonna see my friend". Still,it's a good album, with a couple of great songs.

just listened to the demo again and yep the band version is much better in my opinion...i'll listen to the demo when i'm listening to itw but since this is a pj record i'll go with the backspacer version :D
  • Less is more, the demo's beautiful.

It has to many layers, they did way to much with it. Could go without the strings.
