Funny moment from last night - Ed says " I went to Target yesterday an bought a record... First time I have seen a record in a store like that.... Now if only we can get them to sell record players."

So true

Target has record players.... I bought one to start with there.
  • the awesome old school looking Crosley record players that record onto cd's all in one unit ..... but the record player itself is low quality and doesnt play older used records well.

Why are are record players so expensive? I suppose because they are not made in abundance for obvious reasons but I would like to buy one bc of my PJ records. Where do people get an affordable record player these days? But isn't a record ruined once you play it or something?

That last sentence makes me laugh. Seriously? Only if you throw it against the wall first, or walk on it, or leave it on the radiator. They will degrade like ALL cd's, but slower, if properly maintained. And record players....geez, only PJ fans have this insatiable fix for vinyl (including myself). I am glad to see vinyl making a comeback saleswise, and I am all about the vinyl....but ya still can't play it in your car!

DO NOT go the cheap route for record players; otherwise, why are you buying vinyl?! Anything you can buy @ a Target or Best Buy...it might get the job done, but they suck. I've been that route; never again. Crossley, Technics...the belts slip or rot all the time. More work to open & fix than just buying another POS. Music Hall, Rega, or Bang&Olufsen....My B&O is nearly 23 years old....never any problems. No slippage, needle or belt replacement, never needed to adjust the tonearm or stylus pressure, doesn't skip on carpet or hardwood flooring...
These are some of the reasons long-players are so costly. But I've recouped my investment!

Uh, Technics are not cheap turntables. Mine is a $500 model that plays beautifully.

What I found particularly funny about that comment was that I couldn't find the vinyl at Target on Sunday like he suggested, but I did find their record players. Something tells me he didn't actually go to Target on Sunday.

yeah, I actually bought one of those a few years ago. It looks awesome, but the turntable is a POS. I actually got better quality on my old turntable running it into the line-in on my computer.

  • needledoctor.com has an excellent selection of turntables in all price ranges. I have a Pro-Ject that has served me well for many years...

No offense intended. Their top of line is admirable. But did you buy it @ some major electronics store? My experience w/ Best Buy, Circuit City (ripieces), & Target hasn't yielded (sorry, bad pun) those upper-end models. If so, for you, congrats. The Low end Technics I bought from Best Buy before...garbage. <$150, if i recall.

Mistake #1: buying a record player at a major chain/department store
Nice tables are worth the expense and will pay for themselves over the years.. (not saying I spent an outrageous amount but between $200-$300 for a well built and solidly constructed Sony and I'm sure audiophiles will laugh at a Sony but the sound is beautiful.)

5/23/2011- An utter embarrassment... ticketing failures too many to list.
  • Per Chromiam:
    MY. POINT. PRECISELY.

As Sheryl Crow once said, 'If it makes you happy, it can't be that bad.'
I'm not a fan of some table makers; the point is to make it (your table) work, work for you, AND work for a LONG time, trouble free. Otherwise, it's not worth the investment in the vinyl itself.

No, mine is a top of the line model not available at any retail chain stores.

  • Y ou don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good record player. Its not about the name its about whats on the inside that counts. check out ebay they have tons of tips for ppl like you guys that have no fucking clue. Hope that doesn't offend you but seriously they will tell you the difference between Direct drive or belt driven and all kinds of other neat stuff plus, you gotta remember that alot of sound quality depends on the amp you get. Happy hunting suckers. I kid, I kid!!!
