Pearl Jam...Stones Syndrome

Pearl Jam made peace with their hard rock past on their eponymous eighth album, but its 2009 sequel, Backspacer, is where the group really gets back to basics, bringing in old cohort Brendan O'Brien to produce for the first time since 1996's Yield. To a certain extent, the band has reached the point in its career where every move, every cranked amp, every short tough song is heralded as a return to form -- call it the Stones syndrome -- and so it is with Backspacer, whose meaty riffs have no less vigor than those of Pearl Jam; they're just channeled into a brighter, cheerier package. Despite this lighter spirit, Pearl Jam remain the antithesis of lighthearted good-time rock & roll -- they're convinced rock & roll is a calling, not a diversion -- but there's a tonal shift from the clenched anger that's marked their music of the new millennium, a transition from the global toward the personal. ALL Music Guide

I can kind of see the logic, and the Stones did release Tattoo You in 1981, which is the Last classic album by the Stones...I still see Pearl jam leading up to this point and they will put out their Tattoo You.....The question is where is Pearl jam at live now in time -vs- the Stones in their career (1981 was a Great Tour)

    You don't agree?

Everytime Pearl Jam puts out a new album these days, some douchebag reviewer screams, "Pearl Jam is BACK!"
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do

For sure. See: every review of Backspacer ;) It's not a bad thing, it's a good position to be in really. And like the Stones, there are enough good tunes hidden on those later albums to make it worthwhile for the diehards. But you never know... Bruce and Dylan have made big time comebacks based as much on finding identity as any kind of back to basics thing.

That's basically what this reviewer is saying. That's why I don't understand why that sentiment has been negatively received, because it's true.

  • ". . . what a drag it is getting old."

Great post. We were actually discussing this the other day. I think its right around Emotional Rescue. You figure the stones started in 1962, (PJ in 1990) so add 19 years and you do get 1981 (Tatoo You), indeed their last classic album and last real rock tour . . . but my gut tells me that we are in between Some Girls and Tatoo You, hence we are within the Emotional Rescue period (in between 2 great albums). . . when i was a kid, I watched the film Lets Spend the Night together, and thought the Stones were old, and now PJ is about the same age as the Stones in that film . . . Bizzaro!

How about a U2 comparison, U2 started what? 1979? add 19 years to make it 1998, was that Pop Mart or something, I kinda lost touch with U2 after Achtung Baby.
