Ten is not that great

I know we've gotten this with every new PJ album released post-Vitalogy but what is everyone's obsession with wanting PJ to recreate Ten? It seems like that mantra is stronger than ever. Other than some of Stone riffs and Mike's leads I don't find Ten to be the band's best. The production (even after the BOB remix) sounds incredibly dated and Ed really hadn't found his voice yet (he sounds like a parody of himself at times.) I like everything the band has done but why should they constantly live under the spectre of recreating something that's almost 20 years old? Even comparing early material I'd say Versus is the better of the two albums. How come no one wants PJ to recreate that?
So this life is sacrifice...

  • I would love a recreation of Vitology!
  • I don't want PJ to "recreate" *any* album. I just want them to keep doing new stuff. Why revisit something that's already over and done? Yield is my favorite album, but I certainly wouldn't want them to recreate that.
  • Ten is probably my least favourite album but it has some great tracks (obviously)
  • i love ten, i love every album pearl jam have done but i dont want them to recreate anything they have done, they have surprised me with the direction they have gone with the last two albums but never dissapointed, i hope they just keep growing and release many many albums in the future!
IF YOU HATE SOMETHING,.. DONT YOU DO IT TOO
  • I never listen to Ten anymore ... I still appreciate the songs live, but the album itself hasn't aged that well. My opinion ... PJ only went up from there.

Personally, I've NEVER heard anyone (especially here) say they want another TEN.

    ten was a great record

but I stopped listening to it after the 1,000th spin

they could retire all of those songs (except release) and I would not be unhappy

ten is great because it has so many songs that straight up rock and fill the room with energy.

I though would like to see the band do something a little off center again like no code.

that said i think the band just needs to do what they like.

Ten IS great. You may not like it, but that may just mean that you suck.
  • Ten is still awesome!!!!!!!!!

all you fucks who bash it to show what a cool, hardcore fan you are......

  • I agree that people should stop looking for a remake of Ten, or any album for that matter. However I personally think Ten is quite good. Yes, the production was weak and rushed, but it was a pretty powerful record for a lot of people, myself included. I understand that you may not like it as much now or hold it in the same light. And that's cool enough.

To say that 10 is not that great is Blasphemy!

My fav album is Vitalogy....and believe it or not, when it first was released, it was not that well liked (for those fans that were around back then you remember)

Very intelligent individual we have here. You prob were in diapers, when 10 was the BIGGEST album on the planet!
  • I'm only 18, and I have to say that I love Ten. I usually feel out of place on these forums because I am so young, but even with my exposure to ten almost 15 years after it was made I say it still fucking rocks. Its not my favorite but I don't see why people have decided to bash it.

Not really. Just about every review I've read (either professional or iTunes user) has mentioned how it doesn't measure up to Ten. Even a lot of positive reviews say it. What's the deal? I don't remember that happening as much on Yield-Binaural-Riot Act-Avocado and the new album is considerably more accessible and hook driven than those records. I'm not bashing "Ten" I just don't understand why it's the touchstone for all these people. It wasn't even their most popular seller upon release. Why doesn't anyone bring up the success of Versus or Vitalogy? Vitalogy has PJ's biggest commercial hit on it!

It wasn't their most popular upon release because no one knew them. Vs. was so successful because Ten was a smash hit. Albums like Vs. and Vitalogy fed off of the huge success of their predecessors. When they ended up being great also... well that only helped.

You can't use the immediate sales success (or apparent lack thereof) of Ten to justify it not being a great or "touchstone" album.

I know we've gotten this with every new PJ album released post-Vitalogy but what is everyone's obsession with wanting PJ to recreate Ten?

Thing is... Gossard and Ament set the bar high for themselves on that one and then there was a change of leadership. Ten is, for all intents and purposes, the Stone Gossard album (yeah, yeah... Porch not withstanding). Every song on Ten could be a single. They are all that catchy. Even the more introspective songs like Black, Oceans, and Release. And they are all good songs.

Even given this though, I don't think I've ever read anyone say that they want the band to recreate Ten explicitly. Since I can't seem to recall anyone saying this, I either have a poor memory, or many, many people are assuming that this is some kind of unspoken desire by other fans. In my opinion it seems that this ambient aura of "I wish the new album was another Ten" as a standard is kind of made up.

And I say this as a huge fan of Ten.

  • Ten is a great album. It's just that compared to their other albums, It's not my favorite :)

The times, the atmosphere, the guys ages…….all play into how an album comes out. They can not recreate any of their albums due to those factors.

    Don’t people realize that?
