    but he does steal basketballs
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

and he plays the fuck out of the bass guitar. I can't believe what he adds to Backspacer.

To the point of the post, I am constantly blown away by how great Ed's lyrics are on Backspacer. He took it up a level this time. I haven't been this blown away by his words in a long time.

Shoot. I walked around for weeks after Avocado telling people is was the best job Ed has done with lyrics, ever. Backspacer makes Avocado look like Dr. Seuss in that respect. Ed kicked his own ass.

  • i think SOME of the lyrics are absolutely superb, epic...but others.....em....not so much. i guess it fits in with my feelings on the songs in general. there really are some fantastic lyrics on this album, but for me, i don't find the ENTIRE album the 'best work' lyrically. definitely some songs are up there, but hey...i find that on EVERY pearl jam album, ed is an amazing lyricist.

Stone made him steal basketballs; it's Stone's fault.

  • I miss Eddies memorable lines and wordplays (found on Riot Act for example). The Backspacer lyrics doesn't do much for me, except for Just Breathe I guess. Not that they are lazy, buy easy in a lazy way. S/T was complicated and to word-y.
    Jeff doesn't lie.

Jeff in Milan 2006: "Nex time we come over here (to Europe), we definitely will visit Sweden"

    That was a lie. :)

I agree and disagree. I agree with the fact that some of the songs don't have the greatest lyrics, but I disagree with the idea that that mirrors my feelings about the songs themselves. I find that even some of the songs with weaker lyrics are still really enjoyable songs. The only song I find myself skipping is the Fixer. And that's only because I've been listening to it everyday for the past month and a half and can't wait the 3 minutes or so to get to the next tracks. Even the lyrics for the Fixer, which I had previously considered weak, have grown on me a lot recently. The lyrics that may be a bit weaker are saved by some of the truly unique and exciting vocal melodies and delivery.

see, i also have a problem with some of the phrasings/vocal delivery.....;) hahaha.
this is also why i am SO curious to have my husband listen to the album - he still hasn't! he is not a lyrics guy, at all. he is ALL about the music. he definitely is a bigger fan of their harder-driven music, and as a bassist is obviously very excited by interesting basslines. i did however get him to warm up to itw, so we shall see. some of the lyrics i enjoy more in reading them than in the actual songs and some of em i just don't like the phrasings paired with the music. i don't think my hsuband would have as big an issue with such things, so i really want to hear what he thinks of it all. i do find i enjoy a lot of the music even in tunes that i don't love the pyrics and/or phrasings, but for me, it's still detatched, distracting, so who knows. but then, there are the songs that are just awesome, awesome, awesome...such as just breathe and unthought known......and hell, even got some and gonna see my friend for vastly different reasons....

for the record, i haven't been skipping anything. firstly, it's such a short album, and secondly...i truly want to give it all a fair shake, it's new....and i usually take time......
    Stay with me...

Again, i am going to bring this up....

The use of acronyms are getting a little too out of hand around here. This album is called Backspacer, not bull shit!! Please do not refer to this album as BS as it is NOT bull shit, it is Backspacer, one word.

    Carry on. ;)

Yeah it had to make me pause and think when folks were saying things like GSMF and UT... wtf? Oooooh... sigh, thanks a lot... ;)

Today...hubby gave backspacer CD to this 18 years old kid at a place we frequent... and his eyes just light up like a Christmas tree!

When Bobby came back to him a bit later, Bobby said this kid looked so blown away when reading the lyrics.... and gave him the "wow!!" expression. He was so appreciative and Bobby said he'd be back two weeks later to get a review from him. ;)

  • true, most of it is amazing and it has some staggeringly good parts. something about a crease and rear hole is none too appealing but otherwise...
  • agree tnat the lyrics are stunning and beautiful. just wish there was a little more space for mr. mccready to shine. the solo on amongst the waves is great, just wished for a little more. perhaps live...
  • lyrics are super heavy on the 'less is more' side of things me likey so much better than Avocado this go around... oh boy, & B'sides to boot! My favorite band is back in full force.
