Backspacer is like a hot chick that is real exciting to get with the first few times.

But once you get to know her you find out she is shallow and kind of dumb.

Also, she will not age well.

This is not a great album once you get past the initial excitment of a new pearl jam CD.

We need more riff driven songs from the boys!!!

You're wrong. Backspacer is smoking hot, and she can do rocket science. If you think this album is "shallow," you aren't paying attention.

you're right...songs where there are clearly a formula with very little variation aren't hollow at all.

Great post. So insightful. Keep up the good posting, you're the best. I bet this post will age well, like an ugly chick. Your ideas are like an ugly chick that ages well!

You must have got a bad copy of Backspacer. There are actually 11 songs on there. Maybe you didn't know.

  • yeah, you're fucking stupid. the fixer may not have the typical complexity of eddie vedder's writing, but all the great lyricists have had simple songs too. when you've written over 150 songs, it probably gets pretty impossible to have 12 layers of meaning in every one.

there are other songs like Just Breathe, Unthought Known, and The End with all kinds of depth.

way to cherry pick the ONLY 2 songs that use that formula.

  • I've posted before like a 12-page dissertation on how come the line "fight to get it back again" IS lyrical genius. I don't feel like re-writing it.

But I maintain that the Fixer is deceptively simple. There's a deeper layer there than most of you yahoos seem to think.

At any rate, Backspacer contains some of the best poetry Ed Vedder has ever written. Period.

yes. i've heard the album. the music, at times, is really good and intricate and a departure from a majority of avocado...however, the lyrics by and large don't really impress me. no, they aren't all generic, but it seems as though ed is "trying too hard" at times, and it just...meh, it just doesn't do it for me

I can't find any faults with Got Some. This has to be one of their best power pop songs they've ever done. Ed's delivery is just awesome. And, the music is so propulsive I don't see how anyone wouldn't get caught up in it. I think all those "got some" repetitions fit in perfectly with the music.

See now I think Backspacer is more like a stud.

You go see your friend b/c you wanna get some, he fixes everything, and damn can he jam on his guitar.

Next thing your know your fully engaged, sweaty, heaving, thinkin I just gotta breathe.
But he keeps the goove going like waves cresting and crashing, coming on faster than the speed of sound.

You don't even know what to think when he comes at you with the full force of nature, just before the end.

    Yipes.

If you have a problem with the lyrics on this album, maybe Pearl Jam just isn't the band for you. Ed would be hard-pressed to write much better.

    Five, five...five, five...five against one
One, two, three, four, five against one
    Five, five...five, five...five against one

Two of my favoirte tunes and probably 2 of yours. At the least you can admit that most of the 9 million people who bought Vs. love those songs and all they do is repeat the same silly line over and over again. If you are complaining about the lyrics ,you aren't listening to Backspacer with an open mind. Not liking the songs is one thing, but not seeing how great Ed's lyrics are on this album is rediculous.
