Anyone noticed how the drum and vocal delivery in Gonna See My Friend are pretty similar to "The Real Me" from Quadrophenia?

It hit me the second time listening to the song like a steam engine...which the song also is

Peace

Yeah, noticed it also.....well not so much the comparison to The Real Me, but the delivery of the music so close to The Who's sound, and deliberate styling of Ed's voice to be like Daltry's. Great tune ;)

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed it. I asked a friend of mine if he thought they sounded the same, but he didn't really know what either of the songs sound like so that wasn't much help :D . Its tough being surrounded by people who aren't Pearl Jam fanatics.

Yep, I live that life myself. It's one reason I'm so addicted to this board. :)

  • It's funny, Just Breathe could have been on many a Led Zep album too.

Talink about this topic, if you hear closely johnny guitar starts similar to strutter of kiss. Take a look, it sound very similar that first guitar part. cheers
  • I don't know if it sounds like The Real Me ... except for Jeff kicking the bass's ass all over the place.

What I do know is this: If you aren't quite digging GSMF ... turn it the fuck up. If you play this song at about volume 11, it is impossible not to like it.

  • I had not noticed it, mainly because (I think) I was too absorbed in loving the hell out of the song. But now that mention it, I do notice a bit of a similarity. I like this a lot.

  • I noticed it, too. All the guys are on point with this song but Jeff and Matt KILL IT! Matt's rolls, Jeff's nimble fingers. Now I'm all "hot and bothered", so to speak.

Gonna go crank this shit and wake up the neighbors!

Why are your neighbors sleeping at 1 o'clock in the afternoon on a Tuesday??

Just kidding. If I weren't at work I would definitely crank this too.

i was JUST listening to johnny and thought the same thing!!! and.... i know 'cready is a big kiss fan.
  • i think there are a LOT of obvious musical influences on this album, period. some i enjoy, others not so much....but there's a lot going on, absolutely......that's why i feel it's a bit homage to a lot of music that has come before, and yet at the same time.....it's got it's own unique pearl jam spin...

I kind of see what your saying but Gonna See My Friend sounds a lot less like a Who song that a lot of stuff that Eddie writes
"Well, I think this band is incapable of sucking."
-my dad after hearing Not for You for the first time on SNL .
  • my first impression of gonna see my friend was beatles influence, not who.
i can't quite put my finger on which beatles song but that's what i hear every time.
    needles to say, i L O V E it :D
