Do Eddie Vedder's new songs have deeper meaning?

The album is unbelievable and the songs very deep. But I've come to notice that many are related to death or sickness and being just a human being underneath everything.
So my question is, do you think Eddie is going through some kind of sickness or someone close to him is? or is Eddie and Pearl Jam just this damn amazing with lyrics??
My reasoning is because usually someone has to go through something tragic to be able to have so much meaning behind words like the ones featured on this album.

All opinions and thoughts are welcome.

I think there is a lot more tragedy onTen than on BackSpacer. There's also a lot of fierce deep messages within VS and Vitalogy. Come to think of it also Pearl Jam. I think there are more love songs on Backspacer. I don't see the sickness so much as just very strong emotions.

  • For the 1000th time, no, I don't think so. The band is out on tour right now, no?

  • You're right the songs are deep, but I don't think they're any deeper than any other material they put out. I think that PJ has always had that emotional connection and writing music that actually makes people think about life itself. PJ has always been very conscious of what they're doing, just writing music about real human emotion and being instictual to what they as people are going through probably makes the music that much better. They believe in their music and the meaning behind it and obviously it shows. They've been around for almost 20 years and still together rockin. Built to last.

Once you hit 40 and see your kids growing fast and your parents aging you start really realizing how little time we have on this earth - so I'm hoping it's just that.

I know what you mean and I thought the same thing! After I heard the album all the way through, I immediately thought "HF!, Vedder is dyh...". you know.

Or, as you said, somebody close to him. Or somehow he caught a glimpse of what that must be like. He certainly has an amazing way of passing what that must be like to everyone else, eh?

Someone on these boards who has cancer did a poem on the poetry boards that also gave me a glimpse of what it must feel like to be facing "The End". The same person picked up an eerie vibe from the band at the Chicago shows of some impending death. And this was before the album came out. Strange, huh?

  • I think the comment about passing 40 and seeing your parents age and your kids growing up is dead on. Realizing that Bruce Springsteen just turned 60 has made me start to look at these issues myself. Also, the other comment about PJ lyrics in general is on the mark. Isn't that one of the main attractions of this band? They make us think without connecting all the dots for us to show what they truly believe. They give us enough to sit and contemplate life and its big questions. This is true of all their work.
  • arent deep already??
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
    "..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
  • I agree with the other post, that once you hit 40 and see the youth in your kids and old age of your parents it is hard. Also impossible not to reflect on life to this point and what may lie ahead.

But the issue of EV being sick. NO!!!!

The End was written about a friend of his, he didn't say who, but just that he was working on the lyrics got a phone call from a friend and the song was done is 20 minutes.
