Let's admit it PJ needs Brendan O brien like the Beatles needed George Martin. Ive heard like 30 people say backspacers the best album since yield, the last album BOB produced.I really hope that they continue to work with him for now on for as long as they make new music. They just fit together like Peanut butter and Jelly.

I agree. People who have been critical, can suck it!

  • forgive me for not being technically knowledgable, but what exactly does he do that makes him so great?
In July 2007 Densmore said that he would not rejoin The Doors unless it was fronted by Eddie Vedder. Densmore says, "I play with Jim. If there's someone of that level, OK. I'm not gonna join them with Ian. That's not to diss Ian, he's a good singer - but he's no Jim Morrison. Eddie Vedder? My God, there's a singer."

I totally agree. What a difference with O'Brien as the producer. The songs sound great, crisp, clear. I had to drive from Montreal to Ottawa today while listening to the album and that was the first thing that hit me: how amazing it sounded! And of course, the fact that the songs are great help a bit...!

I think people seem to forget constantly that BOB mixed Riot Act and a majority of Binaural. The only one not invloving him in some way was S/T and that album sounds shit compared to the rest of their albums soundwise, and it's no wonder.
    JUST PLAY THE F***ING NOTE!!!
  • Agreed, and Ed and Stone should write everything

    That's true, he did.

But mixed, isn't "produced." BOB had more influence on the songs themselves.

I mean, if you don't like spaghetti and meatballs, why don't you get the hell out?
  • The Yield-No Code being my favorite, I used to the Jack Irons was the secret sauce, because I just loved he vibe or both albums from start to finish...(even if they technically different styles.). And this is coming from a PJ freak (like just about anyone here) who has regards for just about everything they put to sound.

I just got that same vibe/feel from listening to Backspacer. Technically it may be a different musical style (I.e. "pop" influenced as some say) but whatever I get that sweet vibe that I just didn't get on the previous. All are still very good but don't have that feeling. I listened to Binaural on a plane ride last week and some of the songs were spectacular soundwise (binaural technique) but as a whole not up to Backspacer, Yield No Code.

I can only figure BOB is the secret sauce.
  • Agreed 100%! BOB big time.

I'd actually thought of the O'Brien / Martin comparison to myself a couple days ago ...

But let's not forget that this album was mixed by Bob Ludwig, who has mixed albums for, like ... everybody.

I just wonder whether this album was overly "compressed." It doesn't seem to be, to me -- but i could be wrong about that.
