i kinda hate best ever threads . its solidly in the middle.
yeah i kinda do too. and the word "epic" has sure been thrown around loosely lately....songs like Unthought Known and Amongst the Waves being called it. I like them, they're good tunes. But I don't hear anything I'd call epic in them.
the first three are in there own league b/c the significance of each of those releases had tremedous impacts to the music sence. This album is by far the best thing they have created since that time.
"it feels like it's the end of the world and we all got a good seat. you know -- step right up, get your tickets...here we go."

Im thinking 4 then. You included 10 i guess, with the "impact to music scene" reference...
To be sensible, I'd have to agree that it really is too early to call it, but one thing is for sure - I f@#$ing love this album - and I couldn't say that this early after the release of No Code, Binaural, Riot Act or S/T - those all took a few days of listening before I could make any judgement on them. They have all grown on me over the years and I couldn't imagine life without them (kinda like children I guess), but Backspacer has been a joy to listen to right from the first time. We'll see how it stands the test of time. Ten, Vs, Vitalogy and Yield gave me the same feeling on first listen, so it just might be in the same ball park???

Based on this reasoning, I'd probably back that up - it's sitting at about number 4 of all time for me realistically, but that will inevitably shift either way in time. 4th is pretty damn good after 18 odd years of spectacular albums!

... but then I think of No Code and Yield and I feel like I'm slapping my 4th and 5th (not incl Merkinball) children in the face

Is everyone in this thread high? I've only listened to it once (on myspace streaming) but even if I loved it, I don't think I could rank it as "the best ever." Give it some time folks.

I downloaded it off iTunes (Australia) on Friday, and have been listening to it constantly since then - apart from the minimal downtime in between spent eating/drinking, pissing/shitting (and washing my hands), sleeping a few hours, and looking after my son - and it's immediately shot up into Pearl Jam stardom.
I do agree with you that it is way too early to call, but I've already listened to it - iTunes tells me - 28 times. Wow, I just realised that's 6 hours a day of new album listening. Gotta stop

in my opinion....
the best ever? no way.
but i will say that this record is better than the last 2 & is tied with Binaural.
it's a great fucking album, no doubt...but it's way to early to call it the best ever.
it needs time...people need to connect with it @ shows & life events.
i really love Riot Act & Self-Titled, but this record just hits me in a different way.
so, it's definitely some of their best work since Yield, in my opinion.
and i can't wait to hear it live in Austin!!!!!
I think it is too new to put this in your rank order.
Give it time to breathe like a bottle of wine and see where it falls. In 6 motnhs yield or no code, or whatever could be your favorite again with backspacer 3rd. Who knows!

You do realize most people in this thread are saying that it is NOT the "best ever" right?
